| 2May mercy, peace, and love be multiplied to you. | 2May mercy, peace, and love be lavished on you! |
| 3Dear friends, although I was eager to write you about the salvation we share, I found it necessary to write and exhort you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all. | 3Dear friends, although I have been eager to write to you about our common salvation, I now feel compelled instead to write to encourage you to contend earnestly for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. |
| 4For some men, who were designated for this judgment long ago, have come in by stealth; they are ungodly, turning the grace of our God into promiscuity and denying Jesus Christ, our only Master and Lord. | 4For certain men have secretly slipped in among you--men who long ago were marked out for the condemnation I am about to describe--ungodly men who have turned the grace of our God into a license for evil and who deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ. |
| 5Now I want to remind you, though you know all these things: The Lord first saved a people out of Egypt and later destroyed those who did not believe; | 5Now I desire to remind you (even though you have been fully informed of these facts once for all) that Jesus, having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, later destroyed those who did not believe. |

| 7In the same way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them committed sexual immorality and practiced perversions, just as angels did, and serve as an example by undergoing the punishment of eternal fire. | 7So also Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring towns, since they indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire in a way similar to these angels, are now displayed as an example by suffering the punishment of eternal fire. |

| 10But these people blaspheme anything they don't understand. | 13wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shameful deeds; wandering stars for whom the blackness of darkness is reserved forever! | 13wild sea waves, spewing out the foam of their shame; wayward stars for whom the utter depths of eternal darkness have been reserved. |

| 18they told you, "In the end time there will be scoffers walking according to their own ungodly desires." | 18For they said to you, "In the end time there will come scoffers, propelled by their own ungodly desires." |
