My heart pounds at this and leaps from my chest. | 1At this also my heart pounds and leaps from its place. |
Just listen to His thunderous voice and the rumbling that comes from His mouth. | 2Listen carefully to the thunder of his voice, to the rumbling that proceeds from his mouth. |
He lets it loose beneath the entire sky; His lightning to the ends of the earth. | 3Under the whole heaven he lets it go, even his lightning to the far corners of the earth. |
Then there comes a roaring sound; God thunders with His majestic voice. He does not restrain the lightning when His rumbling voice is heard. | 4After that a voice roars; he thunders with an exalted voice, and he does not hold back his lightning bolts when his voice is heard. |
God thunders marvelously with His voice; He does great things that we cannot comprehend. | 5God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. |
For He says to the snow, "Fall to the earth," and the torrential rains, His mighty torrential rains, | 6For to the snow he says, 'Fall to earth,' and to the torrential rains, 'Pour down.' |
serve as His sign to all mankind, so that all men may know His work. | 7He causes everyone to stop working, so that all people may know his work. |
The wild animals enter their lairs and stay in their dens. | 8The wild animals go to their lairs, and in their dens they remain. |
The windstorm comes from its chamber, and the cold from the driving north winds. | 9A tempest blows out from its chamber, icy cold from the driving winds. |
Ice is formed by the breath of God, and watery expanses are frozen. | 10The breath of God produces ice, and the breadth of the waters freeze solid. |
He saturates clouds with moisture; He scatters His lightning through them. | 11He loads the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through the clouds. |
They swirl about, turning round and round at His direction, accomplishing everything He commands them over the surface of the inhabited world. | 12The clouds go round in circles, wheeling about according to his plans, to carry out all that he commands them over the face of the whole inhabited world. |
He causes this to happen for punishment, for His land, or for His faithful love. | 13Whether it is for punishment for his land, or whether it is for mercy, he causes it to find its mark. |
Listen to this, Job. Stop and consider God's wonders. | 14"Pay attention to this, Job! Stand still and consider the wonders God works. |
Do you know how God directs His clouds or makes their lightning flash? | 15Do you know how God commands them, how he makes lightning flash in his storm cloud? |
Do you understand how the clouds float, those wonderful works of Him who has perfect knowledge? | 16Do you know about the balancing of the clouds, that wondrous activity of him who is perfect in knowledge? |
You whose clothes get hot when the south wind brings calm to the land, | 17You, whose garments are hot when the earth is still because of the south wind, |
can you help God spread out the skies as hard as a cast metal mirror? | 18will you, with him, spread out the clouds, solid as a mirror of molten metal? |
Teach us what we should say to Him; we cannot prepare our case because of our darkness. | 19Tell us what we should say to him. We cannot prepare a case because of the darkness. |
Should He be told that I want to speak? Can a man speak when he is confused? | 20Should he be informed that I want to speak? If a man speaks, surely he would be swallowed up! |
Now men cannot even look at the sun when it is in the skies, after a wind has swept through and cleared them away. | 21But now, the sun cannot be looked at--it is bright in the skies--after a wind passed and swept the clouds away. |
Yet out of the north He comes, shrouded in a golden glow; awesome majesty surrounds Him. | 22From the north he comes in golden splendor; around God is awesome majesty. |
The Almighty--we cannot reach Him-- He is exalted in power! He will not oppress justice and abundant righteousness, | 23As for the Almighty, we cannot attain to him! He is great in power, but justice and abundant righteousness he does not oppress. |
Therefore, men fear Him. He does not look favorably on any who are wise in heart. | 24Therefore people fear him, for he does not regard all the wise in heart." |
