David again gathered all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. | 1David again assembled all the best men in Israel, thirty thousand in number. |
And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale-judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts who sits enthroned on the cherubim. | 2David and all the men who were with him traveled to Baalah in Judah to bring up from there the ark of God which is called by the name of the LORD of hosts, who sits enthroned between the cherubim that are on it. |
And they carried the ark of God on a new cart and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. And Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were driving the new cart, | 3They loaded the ark of God on a new cart and carried it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart. |
with the ark of God, and Ahio went before the ark. | 4They brought it with the ark of God up from the house of Abinadab on the hill. Ahio was walking in front of the ark, |
And David and all the house of Israel were celebrating before the LORD, with songs and lyres and harps and tambourines and castanets and cymbals. | 5while David and all Israel were energetically celebrating before the LORD, singing and playing various stringed instruments, tambourines, rattles, and cymbals. |
And when they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. | 6When they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and grabbed hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. |
And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God. | 7The LORD was so furious with Uzzah, he killed him on the spot for his negligence. He died right there beside the ark of God. |
And David was angry because the LORD had broken out against Uzzah. And that place is called Perez-uzzah to this day. | 8David was angry because the LORD attacked Uzzah; so he called that place Perez Uzzah, which remains its name to this very day. |
And David was afraid of the LORD that day, and he said, “How can the ark of the LORD come to me?” | 9David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, "How will the ark of the LORD ever come to me?" |
So David was not willing to take the ark of the LORD into the city of David. But David took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. | 10So David was no longer willing to bring the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. David left it in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. |
And the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his household. | 11The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months. The LORD blessed Obed-Edom and all his family. |
And it was told King David, “The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom to the city of David with rejoicing. | 12David was told, "The LORD has blessed the family of Obed-Edom and everything he owns because of the ark of God." So David went and joyfully brought the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David. |
And when those who bore the ark of the LORD had gone six steps, he sacrificed an ox and a fattened animal. | 13Those who carried the ark of the LORD took six steps and then David sacrificed an ox and a fatling calf. |
And David danced before the LORD with all his might. And David was wearing a linen ephod. | 14Now David, wearing a linen ephod, was dancing with all his strength before the LORD. |
So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting and with the sound of the horn. | 15David and all Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD, shouting and blowing trumpets. |
As the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, and she despised him in her heart. | 16As the ark of the LORD entered the City of David, Saul's daughter Michal looked out the window. When she saw King David leaping and dancing before the LORD, she despised him. |
And they brought in the ark of the LORD and set it in its place, inside the tent that David had pitched for it. And David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD. | 17They brought the ark of the LORD and put it in its place in the middle of the tent that David had pitched for it. Then David offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings before the LORD. |
And when David had finished offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts | 18When David finished offering the burnt sacrifices and peace offerings, he pronounced a blessing over the people in the name of the LORD of hosts. |
and distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat, and a cake of raisins to each one. Then all the people departed, each to his house. | 19He then handed out to each member of the entire assembly of Israel, both men and women, a portion of bread, a date cake, and a raisin cake. Then all the people went home. |
And David returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David and said, “How the king of Israel honored himself today, uncovering himself today before the eyes of his servants’ female servants, as one of the vulgar fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!” | 20When David went home to pronounce a blessing on his own house, Michal, Saul's daughter, came out to meet him. She said, "How the king of Israel has distinguished himself this day! He has exposed himself today before his servants' slave girls the way a vulgar fool might do!" |
And David said to Michal, “It was before the LORD, who chose me above your father and above all his house, to appoint me as prince over Israel, the people of the LORD—and I will celebrate before the LORD. | 21David replied to Michal, "It was before the LORD! I was celebrating before the LORD, who chose me over your father and his entire family and appointed me as leader over the LORD's people Israel. |
I will make myself yet more contemptible than this, and I will be abased in your eyes. But by the female servants of whom you have spoken, by them I shall be held in honor.” | 22I am willing to shame and humiliate myself even more than this! But with the slave girls whom you mentioned let me be distinguished!" |
And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her death. | 23Now Michal, Saul's daughter, had no children to the day of her death. |
