| 1On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. | 1Now it happened that He was passing through some grainfields on a Sabbath; and His disciples were picking the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands, and eating the grain. |
| 2But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” | 2But some of the Pharisees said, "Why do you do what is not lawful on the Sabbath?" |
| 3And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: | 3And Jesus answering them said, "Have you not even read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, |
| 4how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” | 4how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the consecrated bread which is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?" |

| 42How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? | 49But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation.
