For behold, the Lord GOD of hosts is taking away from Jerusalem and from Judah support and supply, all support of bread, and all support of water; | 1For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, and the whole stay of water, |
the mighty man and the soldier, the judge and the prophet, the diviner and the elder, | 2The mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the prudent, and the ancient, |
the captain of fifty and the man of rank, the counselor and the skillful magician and the expert in charms. | 3The captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counseller, and the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator. |
And I will make boys their princes, and infants shall rule over them. | 4And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them. |
And the people will oppress one another, every one his fellow and every one his neighbor; the youth will be insolent to the elder, and the despised to the honorable. | 5And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and the base against the honourable. |
For a man will take hold of his brother in the house of his father, saying: “You have a cloak; you shall be our leader, and this heap of ruins shall be under your rule”; | 6When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand: |
in that day he will speak out, saying: “I will not be a healer; in my house there is neither bread nor cloak; you shall not make me leader of the people.” | 7In that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of the people. |
For Jerusalem has stumbled, and Judah has fallen, because their speech and their deeds are against the LORD, defying his glorious presence. | 8For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory. |
For the look on their faces bears witness against them; they proclaim their sin like Sodom; they do not hide it. Woe to them! For they have brought evil on themselves. | 9The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves. |
Tell the righteous that it shall be well with them, for they shall eat the fruit of their deeds. | 10Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. |
Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him. | 11Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him: for the reward of his hands shall be given him. |
My people—infants are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, your guides mislead you and they have swallowed up the course of your paths. | 12As for my people, children are their oppressors, and women rule over them. O my people, they which lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. |
The LORD has taken his place to contend; he stands to judge peoples. | 13The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the people. |
The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders and princes of his people: “It is you who have devoured the vineyard, the spoil of the poor is in your houses. | 14The LORD will enter into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard; the spoil of the poor is in your houses. |
What do you mean by crushing my people, by grinding the face of the poor?” declares the Lord GOD of hosts. | 15What mean ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the faces of the poor? saith the Lord GOD of hosts. |
The LORD said: Because the daughters of Zion are haughty and walk with outstretched necks, glancing wantonly with their eyes, mincing along as they go, tinkling with their feet, | 16Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: |
therefore the Lord will strike with a scab the heads of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. | 17Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover their secret parts. |
In that day the Lord will take away the finery of the anklets, the headbands, and the crescents; | 18In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like the moon, |
the pendants, the bracelets, and the scarves; | 19The chains, and the bracelets, and the mufflers, |
the headdresses, the armlets, the sashes, the perfume boxes, and the amulets; | 20The bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs, and the headbands, and the tablets, and the earrings, |
the signet rings and nose rings; | 21The rings, and nose jewels, |
the festal robes, the mantles, the cloaks, and the handbags; | 22The changeable suits of apparel, and the mantles, and the wimples, and the crisping pins, |
the mirrors, the linen garments, the turbans, and the veils. | 23The glasses, and the fine linen, and the hoods, and the vails. |
Instead of perfume there will be rottenness; and instead of a belt, a rope; and instead of well-set hair, baldness; and instead of a rich robe, a skirt of sackcloth; and branding instead of beauty. | 24And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet smell there shall be stink; and instead of a girdle a rent; and instead of well set hair baldness; and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth; and burning instead of beauty. |
Your men shall fall by the sword and your mighty men in battle. | 25Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war. |
And her gates shall lament and mourn; empty, she shall sit on the ground. | 26And her gates shall lament and mourn; and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground. |
