English Standard Version | Holman Christian Standard Bible |
Therefore, holy brothers, you who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession, | 1Therefore, holy brothers and companions in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession; |
who was faithful to him who appointed him, just as Moses also was faithful in all God’s house. | 2He was faithful to the One who appointed Him, just as Moses was in all God's household. |
For Jesus has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses—as much more glory as the builder of a house has more honor than the house itself. | 3For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house. |
(For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God.) | 4Now every house is built by someone, but the One who built everything is God. |
Now Moses was faithful in all God’s house as a servant, to testify to the things that were to be spoken later, | 5Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's household, as a testimony to what would be said in the future. |
but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope. | 6But Christ was faithful as a Son over His household. And we are that household if we hold on to the courage and the confidence of our hope. |
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, | 7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear His voice, |
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, | 8do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, |
where your fathers put me to the test and saw my works for forty years. | 9where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, and saw My works |
Therefore I was provoked with that generation, and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart; they have not known my ways.’ | 10for 40 years. Therefore I was provoked with that generation and said, "They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known My ways." |
As I swore in my wrath, ‘They shall not enter my rest.’” | 11So I swore in My anger, "They will not enter My rest." |
Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. | 12Watch out, brothers, so that there won't be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that departs from the living God. |
But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. | 13But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin's deception. |
For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. | 14For we have become companions of the Messiah if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start. |
As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.” | 15As it is said: Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion. |
For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? | 16For who heard and rebelled? Wasn't it really all who came out of Egypt under Moses? |
And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? | 17And who was He provoked with for 40 years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? |
And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? | 18And who did He swear to that they would not enter His rest, if not those who disobeyed? |
So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. | 19So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. |
