My heart pounds at this and leaps from my chest. | 1“My heart pounds as I think of this. It trembles within me. |
Just listen to his thunderous voice and the rumbling that comes from his mouth. | 2Listen carefully to the thunder of God’s voice as it rolls from his mouth. |
He lets it loose beneath the entire sky; his lightning to the ends of the earth. | 3It rolls across the heavens, and his lightning flashes in every direction. |
Then there comes a roaring sound; God thunders with his majestic voice. He does not restrain the lightning when his rumbling voice is heard. | 4Then comes the roaring of the thunder— the tremendous voice of his majesty. He does not restrain it when he speaks. |
God thunders wondrously with his voice; he does great things that we cannot comprehend. | 5God’s voice is glorious in the thunder. We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power. |
For he says to the snow, "Fall to the earth," and the torrential rains, his mighty torrential rains, | 6“He directs the snow to fall on the earth and tells the rain to pour down. |
serve as his sign to all mankind, so that all men may know his work. | 7Then everyone stops working so they can watch his power. |
The wild animals enter their lairs and stay in their dens. | 8The wild animals take cover and stay inside their dens. |
The windstorm comes from its chamber, and the cold from the driving north winds. | 9The stormy wind comes from its chamber, and the driving winds bring the cold. |
Ice is formed by the breath of God, and watery expanses are frozen. | 10God’s breath sends the ice, freezing wide expanses of water. |
He saturates clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through them. | 11He loads the clouds with moisture, and they flash with his lightning. |
They swirl about, turning round and round at his direction, accomplishing everything he commands them over the surface of the inhabited world. | 12The clouds churn about at his direction. They do whatever he commands throughout the earth. |
He causes this to happen for punishment, for his land, or for his faithful love. | 13He makes these things happen either to punish people or to show his unfailing love. |
Listen to this, Job. Stop and consider God's wonders. | 14“Pay attention to this, Job. Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God! |
Do you know how God directs his clouds or makes their lightning flash? | 15Do you know how God controls the storm and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds? |
Do you understand how the clouds float, those wonderful works of him who has perfect knowledge? | 16Do you understand how he moves the clouds with wonderful perfection and skill? |
You whose clothes get hot when the south wind brings calm to the land, | 17When you are sweltering in your clothes and the south wind dies down and everything is still, |
can you help God spread out the skies as hard as a cast metal mirror? | 18he makes the skies reflect the heat like a bronze mirror. Can you do that? |
Teach us what we should say to him; we cannot prepare our case because of our darkness. | 19“So teach the rest of us what to say to God. We are too ignorant to make our own arguments. |
Should he be told that I want to speak? Can a man speak when he is confused? | 20Should God be notified that I want to speak? Can people even speak when they are confused? |
Now no one can even look at the sun when it is in the skies, after a wind has swept through and cleared the clouds away. | 21We cannot look at the sun, for it shines brightly in the sky when the wind clears away the clouds. |
Yet out of the north he comes, shrouded in a golden glow; awesome majesty surrounds him. | 22So also, golden splendor comes from the mountain of God. He is clothed in dazzling splendor. |
The Almighty--we cannot reach him--he is exalted in power! He will not violate justice and abundant righteousness, | 23We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty; but even though he is just and righteous, he does not destroy us. |
therefore, men fear him. He does not look favorably on any who are wise in heart. | 24No wonder people everywhere fear him. All who are wise show him reverence. ” |
