The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth. The key for the shaft to the abyss was given to him. | 1Then the fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth, and he was given the key to the shaft of the abyss. |
He opened the shaft to the abyss, and smoke came up out of the shaft like smoke from a great furnace so that the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke from the shaft. | 2He opened the shaft of the abyss and smoke rose out of it like smoke from a giant furnace. The sun and the air were darkened with smoke from the shaft. |
Then locusts came out of the smoke on to the earth, and power was given to them like the power that scorpions have on the earth. | 3Then out of the smoke came locusts onto the earth, and they were given power like that of the scorpions of the earth. |
They were told not to harm the grass of the earth, or any green plant, or any tree, but only those people who do not have God's seal on their foreheads. | 4They were told not to damage the grass of the earth, or any green plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their forehead. |
They were not permitted to kill them but were to torment them for five months; their torment is like the torment caused by a scorpion when it stings someone. | 5The locusts were not given permission to kill them, but only to torture them for five months, and their torture was like that of a scorpion when it stings a person. |
In those days people will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them. | 6In those days people will seek death, but will not be able to find it; they will long to die, but death will flee from them. |
The appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle. Something like golden crowns was on their heads; their faces were like human faces; | 7Now the locusts looked like horses equipped for battle. On their heads were something like crowns similar to gold, and their faces looked like men's faces. |
they had hair like women's hair; their teeth were like lions' teeth; | 8They had hair like women's hair, and their teeth were like lions' teeth. |
they had chests like iron breastplates; the sound of their wings was like the sound of many chariots with horses rushing into battle; | 9They had breastplates like iron breastplates, and the sound of their wings was like the noise of many horse-drawn chariots charging into battle. |
and they had tails with stingers like scorpions, so that with their tails they had the power to harm people for five months. | 10They have tails and stingers like scorpions, and their ability to injure people for five months is in their tails. |
They had as their king the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek he has the name Apollyon. | 11They have as king over them the angel of the abyss, whose name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek, Apollyon. |
The first woe has passed. There are still two more woes to come after this. | 12The first woe has passed, but two woes are still coming after these things! |
The sixth angel blew his trumpet. From the four horns of the golden altar that is before God, I heard a voice | 13Then the sixth angel blew his trumpet, and I heard a single voice coming from the horns on the golden altar that is before God, |
say to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels bound at the great river Euphrates." | 14saying to the sixth angel, the one holding the trumpet, "Set free the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates!" |
So the four angels who were prepared for the hour, day, month, and year were released to kill a third of the human race. | 15Then the four angels who had been prepared for this hour, day, month, and year were set free to kill a third of humanity. |
The number of mounted troops was two hundred million; I heard their number. | 16The number of soldiers on horseback was two hundred million; I heard their number. |
This is how I saw the horses and their riders in the vision: They had breastplates that were fiery red, hyacinth blue, and sulfur yellow. The heads of the horses were like the heads of lions, and from their mouths came fire, smoke, and sulfur. | 17Now this is what the horses and their riders looked like in my vision: The riders had breastplates that were fiery red, dark blue, and sulfurous yellow in color. The heads of the horses looked like lions' heads, and fire, smoke, and sulfur came out of their mouths. |
A third of the human race was killed by these three plagues--by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur that came from their mouths. | 18A third of humanity was killed by these three plagues, that is, by the fire, the smoke, and the sulfur that came out of their mouths. |
For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails, because their tails, which resemble snakes, have heads that inflict injury. | 19For the power of the horses resides in their mouths and in their tails, because their tails are like snakes, having heads that inflict injuries. |
The rest of the people, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands to stop worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see, hear, or walk. | 20The rest of humanity, who had not been killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, so that they did not stop worshiping demons and idols made of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood--idols that cannot see or hear or walk about. |
And they did not repent of their murders, their sorceries, their sexual immorality, or their thefts. | 21Furthermore, they did not repent of their murders, of their magic spells, of their sexual immorality, or of their stealing. |
