Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the apostle and high priest of our confession. | 1Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partners in a heavenly calling, take note of Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess, |
He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was in all God's household. | 2who is faithful to the one who appointed him, as Moses was also in God's house. |
For Jesus is considered worthy of more glory than Moses, just as the builder has more honor than the house. | 3For he has come to deserve greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house deserves greater honor than the house itself! |
Now every house is built by someone, but the one who built everything is God. | 4For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. |
Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's household, as a testimony to what would be said in the future. | 5Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken. |
But Christ was faithful as a Son over his household. And we are that household if we hold on to our confidence and the hope in which we boast. | 6But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. We are of his house, if in fact we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope we take pride in. |
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you hear his voice, | 7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! |
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, on the day of testing in the wilderness, | 8"Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness. |
where your fathers tested me, tried me, and saw my works | 9"There your fathers tested me and tried me, and they saw my works for forty years. |
for forty years. Therefore I was provoked to anger with that generation and said, "They always go astray in their hearts, and they have not known my ways." | 10"Therefore, I became provoked at that generation and said, 'Their hearts are always wandering and they have not known my ways.' |
So I swore in my anger, "They will not enter my rest." | 11"As I swore in my anger, 'They will never enter my rest!'" |
Watch out, brothers and sisters, so that there won't be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. | 12See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has an evil, unbelieving heart that forsakes the living God. |
But encourage each other daily, while it is still called today, so that none of you is hardened by sin's deception. | 13But exhort one another each day, as long as it is called "Today," that none of you may become hardened by sin's deception. |
For we have become participants in Christ if we hold firmly until the end the reality that we had at the start. | 14For we have become partners with Christ, if in fact we hold our initial confidence firm until the end. |
As it is said: Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion. | 15As it says, "Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." |
For who heard and rebelled? Wasn't it all who came out of Egypt under Moses? | 16For which ones heard and rebelled? Was it not all who came out of Egypt under Moses' leadership? |
With whom was God angry for forty years? Wasn't it with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? | 17And against whom was God provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? |
And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, if not to those who disobeyed? | 18And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient? |
So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief. | 19So we see that they could not enter because of unbelief. |
