1The Levite family heads approached the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the family heads of the Israelite tribes.1Then the family leaders of the descendants of Levi approached Eleazar the priest and Nun's son Joshua, along with the family leaders of the people of Israel.
2At Shiloh, in the land of Canaan, they told them, "The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities to live in, with their pasturelands for our livestock."2It was at Shiloh in the land of Canaan that they told them, "The LORD ordered through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, along with their pasture lands for our livestock."
3So the Israelites, by the LORD's command, gave the Levites these cities with their pasturelands from their inheritance.3So, just as the Lord had said, the Israelis set aside cities for the descendants of Levi from a portion of their own inheritances, along with their grazing lands.
4The lot came out for the Kohathite clans: The Levites who were the descendants of the priest Aaron received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.4The lottery went to the families of the descendants of Kohath. So the descendants of Aaron the priest, who were descendants of Levi, received thirteen cities by random lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
5The remaining descendants of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the clans of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and half the tribe of Manasseh.5The rest of the descendants of Kohath received ten cities by random lot from the families of the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
6Gershon's descendants received thirteen cities by lot from the clans of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and half the tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.6The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities by random lot from the families of the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and from the half-tribe of Manasseh located in Bashan.
7Merari's descendants received twelve cities for their clans from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.7The descendants of Merari, allocated according to their families, received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.
8The Israelites gave these cities with their pasturelands around them to the Levites by lot, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.8The Israelis apportioned these cities, along with their pasture lands, to the descendants of Levi by random lot, just as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
9The Israelites gave these cities by name from the tribes of the descendants of Judah and Simeon9From the tribes of the descendants of Judah and Simeon, they gave these cities, delineated by name:
10to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because they received the first lot.10for the descendants of Aaron, one of the families of the descendants of Kohath, of the descendants of Levi, since the lot fell in their favor first.
11They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron; Arba was the father of Anak) with its surrounding pasturelands in the hill country of Judah.11They gave them Kiriath-arba, also known as Hebron, (Arba was named after the ancestor of Anak), in the hill country of Judah, along with its surrounding pasture lands.
12But they gave the fields and settlements of the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.12But the fields adjoining the city and its surrounding villages were given to Jephunneh's son Caleb.
13They gave to the descendants of the priest Aaron: Hebron, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands, Libnah with its pasturelands,13So they gave Hebron to the descendants of Aaron the priest to serve as a city of refuge for unintentional killers, along with its pasture lands, Libnah with its pasture lands,
14Jattir with its pasturelands, Eshtemoa with its pasturelands,14Jattir with its pasture lands, Eshtemoa with its pasture lands,
15Holon with its pasturelands, Debir with its pasturelands,15Holon with its pasture lands, Debir with its pasture lands,
16Ain with its pasturelands, Juttah with its pasturelands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasturelands--nine cities from these two tribes.16Ain with its pasture lands, Juttah with its pasture lands, and Beth-shemesh with its pasture lands, for a total of nine cities from these two tribes.
17From the tribe of Benjamin they gave: Gibeon with its pasturelands, Geba with its pasturelands,17From the tribe of Benjamin, Gibeon with its pasture lands, Geba with its pasture lands,
18Anathoth with its pasturelands, and Almon with its pasturelands--four cities.18Anathoth with its pasture lands, and Almon with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.
19All thirteen cities with their pasturelands were for the priests, the descendants of Aaron.19All of the cities allocated to the priests, who were descendants of Aaron, numbered thirteen, along with their pasture lands.
20The allotted cities to the remaining clans of Kohath's descendants, who were Levites, came from the tribe of Ephraim.20Cities from the tribe of Ephraim were also allotted to the families of the descendants of Kohath, that is, to the rest of the descendants of Kohath, who were descendants of Levi.
21The Israelites gave them: Shechem, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands,21Shechem was allocated to them as a city of refuge for unintentional killers, along with its pasture lands, in the mountainous region of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasture lands,
22Kibzaim with its pasturelands, and Beth-horon with its pasturelands--four cities.22Kibzaim with its pasture lands, and Beth-horon with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.
23From the tribe of Dan they gave: Elteke with its pasturelands, Gibbethon with its pasturelands,23From the tribe of Dan were allocated Elteke with its pasture lands, Gibbethon with its pasture lands,
24Aijalon with its pasturelands, and Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands--four cities.24Aijalon with its pasture lands, and Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.
25From half the tribe of Manasseh they gave: Taanach with its pasturelands and Gath-rimmon with its pasturelands--two cities.25From the half-tribe of Manasseh were allocated Taanach with its pasture lands and Gath-rimmon with its pasture lands, for a total of two cities.
26All ten cities with their pasturelands were for the clans of Kohath's other descendants.26All the cities with their pasture lands for the families of the rest of the descendants of Kohath numbered ten.
27From half the tribe of Manasseh, they gave to the descendants of Gershon, who were one of the Levite clans: Golan, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands in Bashan, and Beeshterah with its pasturelands--two cities.27To the descendants of Gershon (one of the Levitical families) from the half-tribe of Manasseh were allocated Golan in Bashan as a city of refuge for unintentional killers, along with its pasture lands, and Beeshterah with its pasture lands, for a total of two cities.
28From the tribe of Issachar they gave: Kishion with its pasturelands, Daberath with its pasturelands,28From the tribe of Issachar were allocated Kishion with its pasture lands, Daberath with its pasture lands,
29Jarmuth with its pasturelands, and En-gannim with its pasturelands--four cities.29Jarmuth with its pasture lands, and En-gannim with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.
30From the tribe of Asher they gave: Mishal with its pasturelands, Abdon with its pasturelands,30From the tribe of Asher were allocated Mishal with its pasture lands, Abdon with its pasture lands,
31Helkath with its pasturelands, and Rehob with its pasturelands--four cities.31Helkath with its pasture lands, and Rehob with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.
32From the tribe of Naphtali they gave: Kedesh in Galilee, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands, Hammoth-dor with its pasturelands, and Kartan with its pasturelands--three cities.32From the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its pasture lands were allocated as a city of refuge for the unintentional killer, Hammoth-dor with its pasture lands, and Kartan with its pasture lands, for a total of three cities.
33All thirteen cities with their pasturelands were for the Gershonites by their clans.33All the cities of the descendants of Gershon according to their families totaled thirteen, including their pasture lands.
34From the tribe of Zebulun, they gave to the clans of the descendants of Merari, who were the remaining Levites: Jokneam with its pasturelands, Kartah with its pasturelands,34From the tribe of Zebulun were allocated to the descendants of Merari (that is, the rest of the descendants of Levi) Jokneam with its pasture lands, Kartah with its pasture lands,
35Dimnah with its pasturelands, and Nahalal with its pasturelands--four cities.35Dimnah with its pasture lands, and Nahalal with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.
36From the tribe of Reuben they gave: Bezer with its pasturelands, Jahzah with its pasturelands,36 From the tribe of Reuben were allocated Bezer with its pasture lands, Jahaz with its pasture lands,
37Kedemoth with its pasturelands, and Mephaath with its pasturelands--four cities.37Kedemoth with its pasture lands, and Mephaath with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities.
38From the tribe of Gad they gave: Ramoth in Gilead, the city of refuge for the one who commits manslaughter, with its pasturelands, Mahanaim with its pasturelands,38From the tribe of Gad were allocated Ramoth in Gilead with its pasture lands, to serve as a city of refuge for the unintentional killer, Mahanaim with its pasture lands,
39Heshbon with its pasturelands, and Jazer with its pasturelands--four cities in all.39Heshbon with its pasture lands, and Jazer with its pasture lands, for a total of four cities in all.
40All twelve cities were allotted to the clans of Merari's descendants, the remaining Levite clans.40So the entire allocation to the descendants of Merari (that is, the rest of the families of the descendants of Levi) according to their families totaled twelve cities.
41Within the Israelite possession there were forty-eight cities in all with their pasturelands for the Levites.41All of the cities of the descendants of Levi that had been set apart among the territorial possession of the Israelis totaled 48, along with their pasture lands.
42Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.42These cities were each surrounded by pasture lands, as was the case with all of these cities.
43So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled there.43So the LORD gave all of the land to Israel that he had promised to give their ancestors, and they took possession and settled there in it.
44The LORD gave them rest on every side according to all he had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies were able to stand against them, for the LORD handed over all their enemies to them.44The LORD gave them peace all around them, just as he had promised their ancestors. Not one of their enemies was able to oppose them—the LORD placed all of their enemies under their control.
45None of the good promises the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed. Everything was fulfilled.45Not one of the good promises that the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed—all of them came about.
