Berean Study Bible | New Living Translation |
For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise against me. | 1Rescue me from my enemies, O God. Protect me from those who have come to destroy me. |
Deliver me from workers of iniquity, and save me from men of bloodshed. | 2Rescue me from these criminals; save me from these murderers. |
See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire against me for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD. | 3They have set an ambush for me. Fierce enemies are out there waiting, LORD, though I have not sinned or offended them. |
For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me. Arise to help me, and take notice. | 4I have done nothing wrong, yet they prepare to attack me. Wake up! See what is happening and help me! |
O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse Yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah | 5O LORD God of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, wake up and punish those hostile nations. Show no mercy to wicked traitors. Interlude |
They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. | 6They come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. |
See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words from their lips: “For who can hear us?” | 7Listen to the filth that comes from their mouths; their words cut like swords. “After all, who can hear us?” they sneer. |
But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations. | 8But LORD, you laugh at them. You scoff at all the hostile nations. |
I will keep watch for You, O my strength, because You, O God, are my fortress. | 9You are my strength; I wait for you to rescue me, for you, O God, are my fortress. |
My God of loving devotion will come to meet me; God will let me stare down my foes. | 10In his unfailing love, my God will stand with me. He will let me look down in triumph on all my enemies. |
Do not kill them, or my people will forget. Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield. | 11Don’t kill them, for my people soon forget such lessons; stagger them with your power, and bring them to their knees, O Lord our shield. |
By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride, in the curses and lies they utter. | 12Because of the sinful things they say, because of the evil that is on their lips, let them be captured by their pride, their curses, and their lies. |
Consume them in wrath; consume them till they are no more, so it may be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah | 13Destroy them in your anger! Wipe them out completely! Then the whole world will know that God reigns in Israel. Interlude |
They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. | 14My enemies come out at night, snarling like vicious dogs as they prowl the streets. |
They scavenge for food, and growl if they are not satisfied. | 15They scavenge for food but go to sleep unsatisfied. |
But I will sing of Your strength and proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning. For You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. | 16But as for me, I will sing about your power. Each morning I will sing with joy about your unfailing love. For you have been my refuge, a place of safety when I am in distress. |
To You, O my strength, I sing praises, for You, O God, are my fortress, my God of loving devotion. | 17O my Strength, to you I sing praises, for you, O God, are my refuge, the God who shows me unfailing love. |
