For the choirmaster. To the tune of “Do Not Destroy.” A Miktam of David, when Saul sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O my God; protect me from those who rise against me. | 1For the director of music. To the tune of "Do Not Destroy." Of David. A miktam. When Saul had sent men to watch David's house in order to kill him. Deliver me from my enemies, O God; be my fortress against those who are attacking me. |
Deliver me from workers of iniquity, and save me from men of bloodshed. | 2Deliver me from evildoers and save me from those who are after my blood. |
See how they lie in wait for me. Fierce men conspire against me for no transgression or sin of my own, O LORD. | 3See how they lie in wait for me! Fierce men conspire against me for no offense or sin of mine, LORD. |
For no fault of my own, they move swiftly to attack me. Arise to help me, and take notice. | 4I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me. Arise to help me; look on my plight! |
O LORD God of Hosts, the God of Israel, rouse Yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to the wicked traitors. Selah | 5You, LORD God Almighty, you who are the God of Israel, rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors. |
They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. | 6They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. |
See what they spew from their mouths—sharp words from their lips: “For who can hear us?” | 7See what they spew from their mouths-- the words from their lips are sharp as swords, and they think, "Who can hear us?" |
But You, O LORD, laugh at them; You scoff at all the nations. | 8But you laugh at them, LORD; you scoff at all those nations. |
I will keep watch for You, O my strength, because You, O God, are my fortress. | 9You are my strength, I watch for you; you, God, are my fortress, |
My God of loving devotion will come to meet me; God will let me stare down my foes. | 10my God on whom I can rely. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me. |
Do not kill them, or my people will forget. Scatter them by Your power, and bring them down, O Lord, our shield. | 11But do not kill them, Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might uproot them and bring them down. |
By the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips, let them be trapped in their pride, in the curses and lies they utter. | 12For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter, |
Consume them in wrath; consume them till they are no more, so it may be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah | 13consume them in your wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. |
They return in the evening, snarling like dogs and prowling around the city. | 14They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. |
They scavenge for food, and growl if they are not satisfied. | 15They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied. |
But I will sing of Your strength and proclaim Your loving devotion in the morning. For You are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. | 16But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. |
To You, O my strength, I sing praises, for You, O God, are my fortress, my God of loving devotion. | 17You are my strength, I sing praise to you; you, God, are my fortress, my God on whom I can rely. |
