For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. O God of my praise, be not silent. | 1For the music director, a psalm of David. O God whom I praise, do not ignore me! |
For wicked and deceitful mouths open against me; they speak against me with lying tongues. | 2For they say cruel and deceptive things to me; they lie to me. |
They surround me with hateful words and attack me without cause. | 3They surround me and say hateful things; they attack me for no reason. |
In return for my love they accuse me, but I am a man of prayer. | 4They repay my love with accusations, but I continue to pray. |
They repay me evil for good, and hatred for my love. | 5They repay me evil for good, and hate for love. |
Set over him a wicked man; let an accuser stand at his right hand. | 6Appoint an evil man to testify against him! May an accuser stand at his right side! |
When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayer be regarded as sin. | 7When he is judged, he will be found guilty! Then his prayer will be regarded as sinful. |
May his days be few; may another take his position. | 8May his days be few! May another take his job! |
May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. | 9May his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow! |
May his children wander as beggars, seeking sustenance far from their ruined homes. | 10May his children roam around begging, asking for handouts as they leave their ruined home! |
May the creditor seize all he owns, and strangers plunder the fruits of his labor. | 11May the creditor seize all he owns! May strangers loot his property! |
May there be no one to extend kindness to him, and no one to favor his fatherless children. | 12May no one show him kindness! May no one have compassion on his fatherless children! |
May his descendants be cut off; may their name be blotted out from the next generation. | 13May his descendants be cut off! May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives! |
May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the LORD, and the sin of his mother never be blotted out. | 14May his ancestors' sins be remembered by the LORD! May his mother's sin not be forgotten! |
May their sins always remain before the LORD, that He may cut off their memory from the earth. | 15May the LORD be constantly aware of them, and cut off the memory of his children from the earth! |
For he never thought to show kindness, but pursued the poor and needy and brokenhearted, even to their death. | 16For he never bothered to show kindness; he harassed the oppressed and needy, and killed the disheartened. |
The cursing that he loved, may it fall on him; the blessing in which he refused to delight, may it be far from him. | 17He loved to curse others, so those curses have come upon him. He had no desire to bless anyone, so he has experienced no blessings. |
The cursing that he wore like a coat, may it soak into his body like water, and into his bones like oil. | 18He made cursing a way of life, so curses poured into his stomach like water and seeped into his bones like oil. |
May it be like a robe wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him. | 19May a curse attach itself to him, like a garment one puts on, or a belt one wears continually! |
May this be the LORD’s reward to my accusers, to those who speak evil against me. | 20May the LORD repay my accusers in this way, those who say evil things about me! |
But You, O GOD, the Lord, deal kindly with me for the sake of Your name; deliver me by the goodness of Your loving devotion. | 21O sovereign LORD, intervene on my behalf for the sake of your reputation! Because your loyal love is good, deliver me! |
For I am poor and needy; my heart is wounded within me. | 22For I am oppressed and needy, and my heart beats violently within me. |
I am fading away like a lengthening shadow; I am shaken off like a locust. | 23I am fading away like a shadow at the end of the day; I am shaken off like a locust. |
My knees are weak from fasting, and my body grows lean and gaunt. | 24I am so starved my knees shake; I have turned into skin and bones. |
I am an object of scorn to my accusers; when they see me, they shake their heads. | 25I am disdained by them. When they see me, they shake their heads. |
Help me, O LORD my God; save me according to Your loving devotion. | 26Help me, O LORD my God! Because you are faithful to me, deliver me! |
Let them know that this is Your hand, that You, O LORD, have done it. | 27Then they will realize this is your work, and that you, LORD, have accomplished it. |
Though they curse, You will bless. When they rise up, they will be put to shame, but Your servant will rejoice. | 28They curse, but you will bless. When they attack, they will be humiliated, but your servant will rejoice. |
May my accusers be clothed with disgrace; may they wear their shame like a robe. | 29My accusers will be covered with shame, and draped in humiliation as if it were a robe. |
With my mouth I will thank the LORD profusely; I will praise Him in the presence of many. | 30I will thank the LORD profusely, in the middle of a crowd I will praise him, |
For He stands at the right hand of the needy one, to save him from the condemners of his soul. | 31because he stands at the right hand of the needy, to deliver him from those who threaten his life. |
