1From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God, | 1Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish |
2saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. | 2and said, "I called out to the LORD from my distress, and he answered me; from the belly of Sheol I cried out for help, and you heard my prayer. |
3For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me. | 3You threw me into the deep waters, into the middle of the sea; the ocean current engulfed me; all the mighty waves you sent swept over me. |
4At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’ | 4I thought I had been banished from your sight, that I would never again see your holy temple! |
5The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head. | 5Water engulfed me up to my neck; the deep ocean surrounded me; seaweed was wrapped around my head. |
6To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God! | 6I went down to the very bottoms of the mountains; the gates of the netherworld barred me in forever; but you brought me up from the Pit, O LORD, my God. |
7As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple. | 7When my life was ebbing away, I called out to the LORD, and my prayer came to your holy temple. |
8Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion. | 8Those who worship worthless idols forfeit the mercy that could be theirs. |
9But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!” | 9But as for me, I promise to offer a sacrifice to you with a public declaration of praise; I will surely do what I have promised. Salvation belongs to the LORD!" |
10And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10Then the LORD commanded the fish and it disgorged Jonah on dry land. |
