From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God, | 1Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly, |
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. | 2And said, I cried by reason of mine affliction unto the LORD, and he heard me; out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice. |
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me. | 3For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me. |
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’ | 4Then I said, I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple. |
The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head. | 5The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head. |
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God! | 6I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. |
As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple. | 7When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple. |
Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion. | 8They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy. |
But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!” | 9But I will sacrifice unto thee with the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay that that I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD. |
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10And the LORD spake unto the fish, and it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land. |
