Berean Study Bible | English Standard Version |
From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God, | 1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the belly of the fish, |
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. | 2saying, “I called out to the LORD, out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. |
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me. | 3For you cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. |
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’ | 4Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; yet I shall again look upon your holy temple.’ |
The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head. | 5The waters closed in over me to take my life; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped about my head |
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God! | 6at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. |
As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple. | 7When my life was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. |
Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion. | 8Those who pay regard to vain idols forsake their hope of steadfast love. |
But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!” | 9But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Salvation belongs to the LORD!” |
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10And the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah out upon the dry land. |
