Berean Study Bible | International Standard Version |
From inside the fish, Jonah prayed to the LORD his God, | 1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the sea creature. |
saying: “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me. From the belly of Sheol I called for help, and You heard my voice. | 2He said: "I called out to the LORD from the midst of affliction directed at me, and he answered me. From the depths of death I cried out for help; and you heard my cry. |
For You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the current swirled about me; all Your breakers and waves swept over me. | 3You cast me into the deep— into the heart of the sea. Flood waters engulfed me. All your breakers and your waves swirled over me. |
At this, I said, ‘I have been banished from Your sight; yet I will look once more toward Your holy temple.’ | 4So I told myself, 'I have been driven away from you. How will I again gaze on your holy Temple?' |
The waters engulfed me to take my life; the watery depths closed around me; the seaweed wrapped around my head. | 5Flood waters encompassed me, the deep surrounded me while seaweed wrapped around my head. |
To the roots of the mountains I descended; the earth beneath me barred me in forever! But You raised my life from the pit, O LORD my God! | 6I sank to the roots of the mountains; the earth's prison bars closed around me forever. Yet you resurrect the dead from the Pit, LORD my God! |
As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD. My prayer went up to You, to Your holy temple. | 7"As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to you in your holy Temple. |
Those who cling to worthless idols forsake His loving devotion. | 8Those who cling to vain idols leave behind the gracious love that could have been theirs. |
But I, with the voice of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to You. I will fulfill what I have vowed. Salvation is from the LORD!” | 9But as for me, with a voice of thanksgiving I will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance is the LORD's!" |
And the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10Then the LORD spoke to the sea creature, and it spewed Jonah onto the dry land. |
