On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, | 1On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; |
and Jesus and His disciples had also been invited to the wedding. | 2and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding. |
When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to Him, “They have no more wine.” | 3When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine." |
“Woman, why does this concern us?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” | 4And Jesus said to her, "Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come." |
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.” | 5His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it." |
Now six stone water jars had been set there for the Jewish rites of purification. Each could hold from twenty to thirty gallons. | 6Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. |
Jesus told the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. | 7Jesus said to them, "Fill the waterpots with water." So they filled them up to the brim. |
“Now draw some out,” He said, “and take it to the master of the banquet.” They did so, | 8And He said to them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it to him. |
and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not know where it was from, but the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside | 9When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter called the bridegroom, |
and said, “Everyone serves the fine wine first, and then the cheap wine after the guests are drunk. But you have saved the fine wine until now!” | 10and said to him, "Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now." |
Jesus performed this, the first of His signs, at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. | 11This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. |
After this, He went down to Capernaum with His mother and brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there a few days. | 12After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days. |
When the Jewish Passover was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. | 13The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. |
In the temple courts He found men selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and money changers seated at their tables. | 14And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. |
So He made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle. He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables. | 15And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; |
To those selling doves He said, “Get these out of here! How dare you turn My Father’s house into a marketplace!” | 16and to those who were selling the doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business." |
His disciples remembered that it is written: “Zeal for Your house will consume Me.” | 17His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME." |
On account of this, the Jews demanded, “What sign can You show us to prove Your authority to do these things?” | 18The Jews then said to Him, "What sign do You show us as your authority for doing these things?" |
Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” | 19Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." |
“This temple took forty-six years to build,” the Jews replied, “and You are going to raise it up in three days?” | 20The Jews then said, "It took forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?" |
But Jesus was speaking about the temple of His body. | 21But He was speaking of the temple of His body. |
After He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this. Then they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken. | 22So when He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He said this; and they believed the Scripture and the word which Jesus had spoken. |
While He was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the signs He was doing and believed in His name. | 23Now when He was in Jerusalem at the Passover, during the feast, many believed in His name, observing His signs which He was doing. |
But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, for He knew them all. | 24But Jesus, on His part, was not entrusting Himself to them, for He knew all men, |
He did not need any testimony about man, for He knew what was in a man. | 25and because He did not need anyone to testify concerning man, for He Himself knew what was in man. |
