Acts 12
Literal Emphasis Translation Par ▾
1Now at that time, Herod the king put forth his hands to evil-treat some of those from the church. 2And he put to death James the brother of John with the sword. 3And having seen that it is pleasing to the Jews, he proceeded to apprehend Peter also. And these were the days of the Unleavened (the paschal feast during the Passover week)- 4And having arrested, he put in prison, and handed him over to four sets of four soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover.

5Therefore Peter was kept (guarded) in the prison; however prayer was strenuously being made by the church to God concerning him.

6And when Herod was about to bring him forth, that night Peter was sleeping between two soldiers having been bound with two chains, and the guards before the door were watching (keeping, guarding) the prison. 7And behold, an angel of the Lord stood by and a light shone in the cell. And having struck the side of Peter, he woke him up, saying, Rise up in haste (speed, quickness). And the chains fell off of his hands. 8And the angel said to him, Gird yourself about (Pull your belt tight) and put on your sandals. And so he did. And he says to him, Wrap around you your cloak and follow me. 9And going out, he followed and did not know that what was happening through the angel was real (true); however he supposed he saw a vision. 10And having passed through the first and second guard, they came upon the iron gate leading into the city, which opened of itself to them; and having gone out they went on through one street and the angel instantly departed from him. 11And Peter having come about to (in) himself, said, Now I truly know that the Lord has sent forth His angel and removed me from out of the hand of Herod and all the expectation of the people of the Jews. 12And having considered it, he came upon the house of Mary the mother of John, who is also called Mark, where many were gathered together and praying. 13And having knocked at the door of the gate, a girl named Rhoda came to answer it (hypakousai-hearken, listen, complied to what was heard). 14And having recognized the voice of Peter, she did not open the gate from joy, however she ran it and reported that Peter was standing before the gate. 15And they said to her, You are raving mad (latin-insanis-crazy like insane). However she kept emphatically insisting it to be so and they kept saying, It is his angel. 16However Peter continued knocking; and having opened it they saw him and were astonished. 17And having waved (made a sign, shaken the hand up and down) to them with the hand to be silent, he thoroughly related to them how the Lord had brought him from out of the prison. And he said, Report to James and to the brothers these things. And having gone out, he went unto another (different) place.

18Now having come day, there was no small disturbance among the soldiers of what had become of Peter. 19And Herod sought after him and did not find him, then having examined the guards, he commanded them to be led away [to death]. And having gone down away from Judea unto Caesarea, he stayed [there].

20Now he [Herod] had been furiously angry (passionately fighting) with the Tyrians and the Sidonians; however they came with the same passion to him, and having persuaded Blastus- who was over the bedchamber of the king- requested peace, because of their region being feed (enlarged, reared, provided for) from the king’s. 21And Herod on the appointed day having put on royal apparel and having sat upon the throne, made a public address to them. 22And the assembled people were calling out (shouting, voicing upon), This is the voice of a god and not of a man! 23And an angel of the Lord instantly struck him, because he did not give in return the glory to God and having been eaten by worms, he breathed his last.

24And the word of God grew and multiplied.

25And Barnabas and Saul returned unto Jerusalem having fulfilled the ministry (diakonian), having taken with them John, the one having also been called Mark.
