1Paul, a called apostle of Jesus Christ, through the preferred-will of God, and brother Sosthenes, 2To the church of God being in Corinth having been sanctified (set apart as holy, regarded as special/sacred) in Christ Jesus, called holy together with all those calling upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ in every place, both theirs and ours. 3Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4I give thanks to my God always concerning you for the grace of God having been given to you in Christ Jesus, 5That in everything you have been enriched in Him, in all speech and all knowing (knowledge), 6Just as the testimony (witness, evidence) about Christ was confirmed (walk where it is solid, guaranteed, ratified) in you, 7So that you will not be lacking (fall short, be behind) in not even one of the grace endowments (charismati), eagerly awaiting the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ; 8Who will also confirm (walk where it is solid, ratify, guarantee, fully secure) you to the consummation (the end-goal), unconvictable (not making legal charges against someone in a court of law) in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9Faithful is God by whom you were called unto fellowship (participation, what is shared in common as the basis of fellowship) of His Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. 10Now I entreat you brothers through the name of our Lord Jesus Christ that you all speak the same and there be no divisions (splits, schisms) among you; but that you be exactly adjusted together (exactly fit together to be in good working order) in the same understanding (mind, reasoning) and in the same judgment (gnome- opinion or judgment formed in active relationship, the result of first-hand knowledge). 11For it was shown (informed, signified) to me concerning you my brothers by those of Chloe that there are contentions (strifes, a readiness to quarrel, affection for dispute, latin- contentiones) among you. 12And I say this, that each of you says, “I am indeed of Paul” – “but I of Apollos, ”- “but I of Cephas, ” – “but I of Christ.” 13Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or unto the name of Paul were you baptized? 14I thank God that I baptized none of you, except Crispus and Gaius, 15that no one may say that unto my name you were baptized. 16And I did also baptize the household of Stephanas. Beyond that I do not know whether I baptized any other. 17For Christ did not send me to baptize but rather to preach the gospel; not with wisdom of speech that the cross of Christ be emptied out (made valueless, made unreal, without recognition). 18For the word (speech) of the cross is absurd folly (senseless, folly, absurdity, foolishness, dull, lacking sharpness, moria- like moronic) indeed to those perishing; but to those of us being saved it is the power of God. 19For it has been written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and the synthesized holistic understanding (synthesized understanding, putting or running together in the mind) of the intelligent (ones that understand by synthesizing) I will confound (un-place, disregard as spurious, do away with, set aside, reject what is already laid down). 20Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater (ostentatious disputer that sounds off to look important/impressive) of this age? Has not God made absurd (stupid, dull, foolish) the wisdom of this world? 21For seeing that indeed in the wisdom of God the world by its wisdom knew not God, it well-pleased God because of the absurd folly of preaching to save those believing. 22Seeing that both Jews ask for signs and Greeks seek wisdom: 23But we preach Christ crucified, to the Jewish indeed a stumbling block (cause of offense, snare) and to ethnicities absurd folly, 24But to them who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25For the moron-ness (stupidity, dullness) of God is wiser than men and the weakness (frailty) of God is mightier (stronger, engaging combative strength) than men. 26For consider (see, look at) your calling, brothers, that not many are wise according to the flesh, not many powerful, not many of noble birth. 27But rather God has chosen the moronic things (stupidity, foolishness, dullness) of the world that He may confound (shame, put to utter confusion) the wise; and God has chosen the weak things of the world that He may confound (shame, put to utter confusion) the mighty; 28And God has chosen the ignoble of the world and the despised things, even the things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29So that all flesh may not boast (glory) in the sight of God. 30And from out of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became wisdom unto us from God, righteousness (justice) together with sanctification and redemption; 31so that as it has been written, “The one boasting (glorying) in the Lord, let him boast (glory).” |
