The term "untempered" is often associated with the concept of something lacking proper preparation or fortification, particularly in a spiritual or moral sense. In the context of the Bible, it is used metaphorically to describe actions, teachings, or structures that are superficially sound but lack true substance or integrity.

Biblical References:

The primary biblical reference to "untempered" is found in the book of Ezekiel. The prophet Ezekiel uses the imagery of "untempered mortar" to describe the false prophets of Israel who were misleading the people with deceptive visions and false assurances of peace.

· Ezekiel 13:10-11 : "Because they have led My people astray, saying, ‘Peace,’ when there is no peace, and because when a flimsy wall is built, they plaster it with whitewash, tell those who plaster it with whitewash that it will fall. There will be a deluge of rain, and I will send hailstones plunging down, and a windstorm will burst forth."

In this passage, the "untempered mortar" or "whitewash" symbolizes the false security and deceptive teachings that the prophets were offering. The wall, though appearing strong, is destined to collapse under the weight of divine judgment, illustrating the futility of relying on anything other than God's truth.

Theological Implications:

From a theological perspective, the concept of "untempered" serves as a warning against superficiality in spiritual matters. It underscores the importance of building one's life and faith on a solid foundation, as emphasized by Jesus in the New Testament.

· Matthew 7:24-27 : "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because its foundation was on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!"

This teaching of Jesus complements the warning in Ezekiel, highlighting the necessity of genuine faith and obedience to God's word as the true foundation for life.

Moral and Spiritual Lessons:

The imagery of "untempered" elements in Scripture serves as a powerful metaphor for the dangers of hypocrisy, false teachings, and superficial faith. It calls believers to examine their own lives and ensure that their faith is not merely a facade but is deeply rooted in the truth of God's word.

The Apostle Paul also warns against being swayed by false teachings and emphasizes the need for spiritual maturity and discernment.

· Ephesians 4:14 : "Then we will no longer be infants, tossed about by the waves and carried around by every wind of teaching and by the clever cunning of men in their deceitful scheming."

In summary, the biblical use of "untempered" serves as a caution against the dangers of false security and the importance of a faith that is genuine, tested, and true. It encourages believers to seek a deeper understanding of God's word and to build their lives on the unshakeable foundation of His truth.

UNTEMPERED

un-tem'-perd (taphel): Used of mortar in Ezekiel 13:10-15; Ezekiel 22:28. Taphel probably refers to mortar made with clay instead of slaked lime. In the interior of Palestine and Syria walls are still commonly built of small stones or mud bricks, and then smeared over with clay mortar. The surface is rubbed smooth and is attractive in appearance. This coating prolongs the life of the wall but requires yearly attention if the wall is to stand.

Ezekiel uses the practice to typify the work of false prophets. They build up stories and make them plausible by an outward semblance to truth, while, in fact, they are flimsy, unreliable prophecies, resembling the walls described above, which can be broken down by a push or a heavy rain storm.
