The Humility of Christ: On Account of, he Was Despised

The humility of Christ is a profound theme woven throughout the New Testament, illustrating the depth of His condescension and the reasons for which He was despised by many during His earthly ministry. This humility is not only a testament to His character but also a fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies and a model for Christian conduct.

Prophetic Foundations

The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of a suffering servant who would be "despised and rejected by men" (Isaiah 53:3). This prophecy sets the stage for understanding the humility of Christ as an integral part of His mission. The Messiah was expected to be a triumphant king, yet Isaiah's depiction of a suffering servant was a paradox that many in Israel struggled to reconcile.

Incarnation and Humility

The incarnation itself is the ultimate act of humility. Philippians 2:6-8 describes how Christ, "existing in the form of God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in human likeness." This self-emptying, or kenosis, is the foundation of His humility. By becoming human, Christ willingly subjected Himself to the limitations and sufferings of human existence.

Earthly Ministry

During His ministry, Christ's humility was evident in His associations and actions. He was born in a manger, lived a life of poverty, and associated with the marginalized and sinners. Matthew 11:19 records that He was called "a friend of tax collectors and sinners," a title meant to scorn Him but which He embraced as part of His mission to seek and save the lost.

Rejection by Religious Leaders

Christ's humility and His challenge to the established religious order led to His rejection by the religious leaders of His day. They expected a Messiah who would affirm their status and power, but Jesus' teachings often rebuked their hypocrisy and pride. In John 8:48 , the Jews insulted Him, saying, "Are we not right in saying that You are a Samaritan and have a demon?" Such accusations reflect the disdain they held for Him, rooted in their inability to accept His humble approach to righteousness and authority.

Suffering and Crucifixion

The ultimate expression of Christ's humility is found in His suffering and crucifixion. Isaiah 53:7 prophesies, "He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open His mouth." This silent submission to unjust suffering is a powerful testament to His humility. The crucifixion, a death reserved for the lowest criminals, was the culmination of His despised status. As He hung on the cross, He was mocked and scorned, yet He prayed for His persecutors, saying, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34).

Theological Implications

The humility of Christ is central to the Christian understanding of salvation. Hebrews 2:9 states, "But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone." His humility was not an end in itself but a means to accomplish the redemptive work of God. Through His humility, Christ identified with humanity, bore the weight of sin, and provided a path to reconciliation with God.

Exemplar for Believers

Christ's humility serves as a model for believers. In Philippians 2:5 , Paul exhorts Christians to "Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus." The call to emulate Christ's humility is a call to live lives marked by selflessness, service, and a willingness to endure suffering for the sake of others.
