Portions for Priests

Topical Encyclopedia
In the biblical context, "portions for priests" refers to the specific allocations and provisions designated for the Levitical priesthood as outlined in the Old Testament. These portions were essential for the sustenance and support of the priests, who were set apart for the service of God and the community of Israel. The concept is rooted in the understanding that the tribe of Levi, to which the priests belonged, did not receive a territorial inheritance like the other tribes of Israel. Instead, their inheritance was the Lord Himself and the offerings brought by the people.

Biblical Foundation

The primary biblical foundation for the portions for priests is found in the Pentateuch, particularly in the books of Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. In Leviticus 7:35-36 , it is stated: "This is the portion of the offerings made by fire to the LORD for Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the LORD as priests. On that day the LORD commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual portion for the generations to come."

Types of Portions

1. Sacrificial Offerings: The priests were entitled to specific parts of the sacrificial offerings. For instance, Leviticus 7:31-34 details the portions of the peace offerings: "The priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons. You are to give the right thigh to the priest as a contribution from your peace offerings."

2. Tithes: The Levites, including the priests, were supported by the tithes of the Israelites. Numbers 18:21 states, "Behold, I have given the Levites all the tithes in Israel as an inheritance in return for the work they do, the work of the Tent of Meeting."

3. Firstfruits and Firstborn: The firstfruits of the harvest and the firstborn of animals were also given to the priests. Deuteronomy 18:3-5 specifies, "This shall be the priests’ share from the people, from those who offer sacrifices, whether bull or sheep: They are to give the priest the shoulder, the jowls, and the stomach. You are to give him the firstfruits of your grain, new wine, and oil, and the first wool sheared from your flock."

4. Holy Contributions: The priests received portions from the holy contributions brought by the Israelites. Numbers 18:8 declares, "Then the LORD said to Aaron, 'Behold, I have given you charge of the contributions made to Me. All the holy offerings of the Israelites I give to you and your sons as a portion and a permanent statute.'"

Purpose and Significance

The portions for priests served several purposes. They provided for the material needs of the priests, allowing them to focus on their spiritual duties without the burden of secular labor. This system underscored the principle that those who serve at the altar should share in the offerings of the altar (cf. 1 Corinthians 9:13-14). Additionally, the portions for priests reinforced the communal responsibility of the Israelites to support the spiritual leadership and maintain the worship and sacrificial system central to their covenant relationship with God.

Historical and Theological Context

Historically, the portions for priests were integral to the functioning of the Tabernacle and later the Temple. Theologically, they emphasized the holiness and set-apart nature of the priesthood, reflecting the broader theme of God's provision and the reciprocal relationship between God and His people. The priests acted as mediators between God and Israel, and their sustenance through these portions symbolized the community's acknowledgment of God's sovereignty and their commitment to His covenant.
