Definition:
To intimidate is to frighten or overawe someone, especially in order to make them do what one wants. In a biblical context, intimidation can be seen as a tactic used by individuals or groups to instill fear and manipulate others, often contrary to the will and purposes of God.

Biblical Instances and Principles:

1. Goliath and the Israelites:
One of the most prominent examples of intimidation in the Bible is the account of Goliath and the Israelites. Goliath, a Philistine giant, used his size and strength to intimidate the Israelite army. For forty days, he challenged them, causing fear and dismay among the soldiers. However, David, a young shepherd boy, refused to be intimidated. Trusting in the Lord, he confronted and defeated Goliath with a sling and a stone (1 Samuel 17:4-50). This account illustrates that faith in God can overcome intimidation.

2. Sanballat and Nehemiah:
During the rebuilding of Jerusalem's walls, Nehemiah faced intimidation from Sanballat and others who opposed the work. They attempted to frighten Nehemiah and his workers to halt the reconstruction. Nehemiah responded with prayer and perseverance, refusing to be deterred by their threats (Nehemiah 4:1-23). This account demonstrates the importance of steadfastness and reliance on God when facing intimidation.

3. The Early Church:
The early Christians often faced intimidation from religious and political authorities. In Acts 4, Peter and John were arrested and threatened by the Sanhedrin for preaching about Jesus. Despite the intimidation, they boldly declared, "We cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard" (Acts 4:20). The early church's response to intimidation was marked by prayer, boldness, and reliance on the Holy Spirit.

4. Fear of Man vs. Fear of God:
The Bible contrasts the fear of man with the fear of God. Proverbs 29:25 states, "The fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD is set securely on high" . Intimidation often stems from the fear of man, which can lead to compromise and disobedience. In contrast, fearing God leads to wisdom, courage, and obedience.

5. Jesus' Teaching on Fear:
Jesus taught His disciples not to fear those who can kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Instead, they should fear God, who has authority over both soul and body (Matthew 10:28). This teaching encourages believers to prioritize their reverence for God over any intimidation they may face from others.

6. Paul's Encouragement to Timothy:
The Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy not to be intimidated by his youth or the challenges of ministry. In 2 Timothy 1:7, Paul writes, "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control" . This verse highlights that God empowers believers with the strength and courage needed to overcome intimidation.

Conclusion:
While intimidation is a common tactic used to instill fear and control, the Bible provides numerous examples and teachings that encourage believers to stand firm in their faith. By trusting in God, relying on His strength, and fearing Him above all else, Christians can resist intimidation and fulfill their God-given purposes.
