Definition and Usage:

In biblical terms, "glorify" and "glory" are deeply interconnected concepts that refer to the honor, praise, and majesty attributed to God, as well as the manifestation of His divine presence and attributes. The Hebrew word for glory, "kavod," and the Greek word "doxa" both convey the idea of weightiness, splendor, and honor. To glorify God is to recognize and proclaim His supreme worth and majesty.

Old Testament Context:

In the Old Testament, the glory of God is often associated with His presence and power. For example, the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34) and later the temple (1 Kings 8:11), signifying His dwelling among His people. The psalmist declares, "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands" (Psalm 19:1), illustrating how creation itself reflects God's glory.

The prophets also speak of God's glory in terms of His future plans for His people. Isaiah prophesies, "Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD rises upon you" (Isaiah 60:1), pointing to a time of restoration and divine presence.

New Testament Context:

In the New Testament, the concept of glory is further expanded through the person and work of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of John emphasizes that Jesus is the embodiment of God's glory: "The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth" (John 1:14). Jesus' life, death, and resurrection are the ultimate revelation of God's glory.

Believers are called to glorify God in their lives. Paul writes, "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31). This call to glorify God encompasses all aspects of life, urging Christians to reflect God's character and honor Him in their actions.

Theological Significance:

The glory of God is central to understanding His nature and His relationship with creation. It is both an intrinsic attribute of God and something that can be revealed and recognized. God's glory is His holiness made manifest, His power displayed, and His love demonstrated.

The glorification of God is the ultimate purpose of creation and redemption. As the Westminster Shorter Catechism famously states, "Man's chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever." This reflects the biblical teaching that all of creation exists to honor and magnify the Creator.

Eschatological Aspect:

The Bible also speaks of a future consummation of God's glory. In Revelation, the New Jerusalem is described as having "the glory of God, its radiance like a most precious jewel" (Revelation 21:11). The ultimate hope of believers is to dwell in the presence of God's glory for eternity, where His light will illuminate all things, and His majesty will be fully revealed and celebrated.

Practical Application:

Christians are encouraged to live lives that glorify God, reflecting His character in their conduct, worship, and witness. This involves a commitment to holiness, love, and service, as well as a continual acknowledgment of God's sovereignty and grace. By doing so, believers participate in the divine purpose of making God's glory known throughout the earth.
