Erecting, in the context of the Bible, often refers to the construction or setting up of structures, altars, monuments, or places of worship. This act is significant in biblical narratives as it frequently symbolizes obedience, worship, and remembrance of God's covenant and acts.

Erecting Altars and Monuments

Throughout the Old Testament, the patriarchs and leaders of Israel erected altars and monuments as acts of worship and remembrance. For instance, Noah, after the flood, "built an altar to the LORD" (Genesis 8:20) as a sign of gratitude and worship. Similarly, Abraham erected altars at various locations, such as in Genesis 12:7, where "the LORD appeared to Abram and said, 'To your offspring I will give this land.' So he built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him."

Jacob, after his vision of the ladder reaching to heaven, set up a stone pillar and poured oil on it, naming the place Bethel (Genesis 28:18-19). This act of erecting a monument was a physical manifestation of his encounter with God and a commitment to the vow he made.

Erecting the Tabernacle and the Temple

The erection of the Tabernacle and later the Temple represents significant events in Israel's history. The Tabernacle, as described in Exodus, was a portable sanctuary that the Israelites constructed according to God's specific instructions. Exodus 40:2 states, "On the first day of the first month you are to set up the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting." The meticulous details provided for its construction underscore the importance of obedience and reverence in worship.

King Solomon's erection of the Temple in Jerusalem marked a pivotal moment for Israel. In 1 Kings 6:1 , it is recorded, "In the four hundred and eightieth year after the Israelites had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, the second month, he began to build the house of the LORD." The Temple served as a permanent dwelling place for God's presence among His people and a central place for worship and sacrifice.

Erecting Idols and High Places

Conversely, the Bible also records instances where the erection of idols and high places led to Israel's downfall. The construction of the golden calf in Exodus 32 is a notable example of disobedience and idolatry. Despite witnessing God's mighty acts, the Israelites demanded Aaron to "make us gods who will go before us" (Exodus 32:1), leading to the erection of an idol that provoked God's anger.

The erection of high places, unauthorized sites of worship, often led Israel astray. These high places were condemned by God, as seen in 2 Kings 17:9-12 , where the Israelites "set up for themselves sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree." Such actions were a direct violation of God's command to worship Him alone and in the manner He prescribed.

Erecting as a Symbol of Faith and Obedience

In the New Testament, while the physical act of erecting structures is less emphasized, the spiritual implications remain. Believers are called to build their lives on the foundation of Jesus Christ, as Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 3:11 , "For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ." This spiritual erection signifies faith and obedience to God's Word.

Erecting, therefore, in the biblical sense, encompasses both the physical act of construction and the spiritual act of establishing one's life in accordance with God's will. It serves as a reminder of the importance of worship, obedience, and the dangers of idolatry.
