New Living Translation | NET Bible |
“My heart pounds as I think of this. It trembles within me. | 1At this also my heart pounds and leaps from its place. |
Listen carefully to the thunder of God’s voice as it rolls from his mouth. | 2Listen carefully to the thunder of his voice, to the rumbling that proceeds from his mouth. |
It rolls across the heavens, and his lightning flashes in every direction. | 3Under the whole heaven he lets it go, even his lightning to the far corners of the earth. |
Then comes the roaring of the thunder— the tremendous voice of his majesty. He does not restrain it when he speaks. | 4After that a voice roars; he thunders with an exalted voice, and he does not hold back his lightning bolts when his voice is heard. |
God’s voice is glorious in the thunder. We can’t even imagine the greatness of his power. | 5God thunders with his voice in marvelous ways; he does great things beyond our understanding. |
“He directs the snow to fall on the earth and tells the rain to pour down. | 6For to the snow he says, 'Fall to earth,' and to the torrential rains, 'Pour down.' |
Then everyone stops working so they can watch his power. | 7He causes everyone to stop working, so that all people may know his work. |
The wild animals take cover and stay inside their dens. | 8The wild animals go to their lairs, and in their dens they remain. |
The stormy wind comes from its chamber, and the driving winds bring the cold. | 9A tempest blows out from its chamber, icy cold from the driving winds. |
God’s breath sends the ice, freezing wide expanses of water. | 10The breath of God produces ice, and the breadth of the waters freeze solid. |
He loads the clouds with moisture, and they flash with his lightning. | 11He loads the clouds with moisture; he scatters his lightning through the clouds. |
The clouds churn about at his direction. They do whatever he commands throughout the earth. | 12The clouds go round in circles, wheeling about according to his plans, to carry out all that he commands them over the face of the whole inhabited world. |
He makes these things happen either to punish people or to show his unfailing love. | 13Whether it is for punishment for his land, or whether it is for mercy, he causes it to find its mark. |
“Pay attention to this, Job. Stop and consider the wonderful miracles of God! | 14"Pay attention to this, Job! Stand still and consider the wonders God works. |
Do you know how God controls the storm and causes the lightning to flash from his clouds? | 15Do you know how God commands them, how he makes lightning flash in his storm cloud? |
Do you understand how he moves the clouds with wonderful perfection and skill? | 16Do you know about the balancing of the clouds, that wondrous activity of him who is perfect in knowledge? |
When you are sweltering in your clothes and the south wind dies down and everything is still, | 17You, whose garments are hot when the earth is still because of the south wind, |
he makes the skies reflect the heat like a bronze mirror. Can you do that? | 18will you, with him, spread out the clouds, solid as a mirror of molten metal? |
“So teach the rest of us what to say to God. We are too ignorant to make our own arguments. | 19Tell us what we should say to him. We cannot prepare a case because of the darkness. |
Should God be notified that I want to speak? Can people even speak when they are confused? | 20Should he be informed that I want to speak? If a man speaks, surely he would be swallowed up! |
We cannot look at the sun, for it shines brightly in the sky when the wind clears away the clouds. | 21But now, the sun cannot be looked at--it is bright in the skies--after a wind passed and swept the clouds away. |
So also, golden splendor comes from the mountain of God. He is clothed in dazzling splendor. | 22From the north he comes in golden splendor; around God is awesome majesty. |
We cannot imagine the power of the Almighty; but even though he is just and righteous, he does not destroy us. | 23As for the Almighty, we cannot attain to him! He is great in power, but justice and abundant righteousness he does not oppress. |
No wonder people everywhere fear him. All who are wise show him reverence. ” | 24Therefore people fear him, for he does not regard all the wise in heart." |
