| 1And so, dear brothers and sisters who belong to God and are partners with those called to heaven, think carefully about this Jesus whom we declare to be God’s messenger and High Priest. | 1Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, partners in a heavenly calling, take note of Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess, |
| 2For he was faithful to God, who appointed him, just as Moses served faithfully when he was entrusted with God’s entire house. | 2who is faithful to the one who appointed him, as Moses was also in God's house. |
| 3But Jesus deserves far more glory than Moses, just as a person who builds a house deserves more praise than the house itself. | 3For he has come to deserve greater glory than Moses, just as the builder of a house deserves greater honor than the house itself! |
| 4For every house has a builder, but the one who built everything is God. | 4For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. |
| 5Moses was certainly faithful in God’s house as a servant. His work was an illustration of the truths God would reveal later. | 5Now Moses was faithful in all God's house as a servant, to testify to the things that would be spoken. |
| 6But Christ, as the Son, is in charge of God’s entire house. And we are God’s house, if we keep our courage and remain confident in our hope in Christ. | 6But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. We are of his house, if in fact we hold firmly to our confidence and the hope we take pride in. |
| 7That is why the Holy Spirit says, “Today when you hear his voice, | 7Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, "Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! |
| 8don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness. | 8"Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, in the day of testing in the wilderness. |
| 9There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years. | 9"There your fathers tested me and tried me, and they saw my works for forty years. |
| 10So I was angry with them, and I said, ‘Their hearts always turn away from me. They refuse to do what I tell them.’ | 10"Therefore, I became provoked at that generation and said, 'Their hearts are always wandering and they have not known my ways.' |
| 11So in my anger I took an oath: ‘They will never enter my place of rest.’” | 11"As I swore in my anger, 'They will never enter my rest!'" |
| 12Be careful then, dear brothers and sisters. Make sure that your own hearts are not evil and unbelieving, turning you away from the living God. | 12See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has an evil, unbelieving heart that forsakes the living God. |
| 13You must warn each other every day, while it is still “today,” so that none of you will be deceived by sin and hardened against God. | 13But exhort one another each day, as long as it is called "Today," that none of you may become hardened by sin's deception. |
| 14For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ. | 14For we have become partners with Christ, if in fact we hold our initial confidence firm until the end. |
| 15Remember what it says: “Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled.” | 15As it says, "Oh, that today you would listen as he speaks! Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion." |
| 16And who was it who rebelled against God, even though they heard his voice? Wasn’t it the people Moses led out of Egypt? | 16For which ones heard and rebelled? Was it not all who came out of Egypt under Moses' leadership? |
| 17And who made God angry for forty years? Wasn’t it the people who sinned, whose corpses lay in the wilderness? | 17And against whom was God provoked for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, whose dead bodies fell in the wilderness? |
| 18And to whom was God speaking when he took an oath that they would never enter his rest? Wasn’t it the people who disobeyed him? | 18And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient? |
| 19So we see that because of their unbelief they were not able to enter his rest. | 19So we see that they could not enter because of unbelief. |
