Some time later, Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer and chief baker offended their royal master.1After these things happened, the cupbearer to the king of Egypt and the royal baker offended their master, the king of Egypt.
Pharaoh became angry with these two officials,2Pharaoh was enraged with his two officials, the cupbearer and the baker,
and he put them in the prison where Joseph was, in the palace of the captain of the guard.3so he imprisoned them in the house of the captain of the guard in the same facility where Joseph was confined.
They remained in prison for quite some time, and the captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, who looked after them.4The captain of the guard appointed Joseph to be their attendant, and he served them. They spent some time in custody.
While they were in prison, Pharaoh’s cup-bearer and baker each had a dream one night, and each dream had its own meaning.5Both of them, the cupbearer and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were confined in the prison, had a dream the same night. Each man's dream had its own meaning.
When Joseph saw them the next morning, he noticed that they both looked upset.6When Joseph came to them in the morning, he saw that they were looking depressed.
“Why do you look so worried today?” he asked them.7So he asked Pharaoh's officials, who were with him in custody in his master's house, "Why do you look so sad today?"
And they replied, “We both had dreams last night, but no one can tell us what they mean.” “Interpreting dreams is God’s business,” Joseph replied. “Go ahead and tell me your dreams.”8They told him, "We both had dreams, but there is no one to interpret them." Joseph responded, "Don't interpretations belong to God? Tell them to me."
So the chief cup-bearer told Joseph his dream first. “In my dream,” he said, “I saw a grapevine in front of me.9So the chief cupbearer told his dream to Joseph: "In my dream, there was a vine in front of me.
The vine had three branches that began to bud and blossom, and soon it produced clusters of ripe grapes.10On the vine there were three branches. As it budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters ripened into grapes.
I was holding Pharaoh’s wine cup in my hand, so I took a cluster of grapes and squeezed the juice into the cup. Then I placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.”11Now Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, so I took the grapes, squeezed them into his cup, and put the cup in Pharaoh's hand."
“This is what the dream means,” Joseph said. “The three branches represent three days.12"This is its meaning," Joseph said to him. "The three branches represent three days.
Within three days Pharaoh will lift you up and restore you to your position as his chief cup-bearer.13In three more days Pharaoh will reinstate you and restore you to your office. You will put Pharaoh's cup in his hand, just as you did before when you were cupbearer.
And please remember me and do me a favor when things go well for you. Mention me to Pharaoh, so he might let me out of this place.14But remember me when it goes well for you, and show me kindness. Make mention of me to Pharaoh and bring me out of this prison,
For I was kidnapped from my homeland, the land of the Hebrews, and now I’m here in prison, but I did nothing to deserve it.”15for I really was kidnapped from the land of the Hebrews and I have done nothing wrong here for which they should put me in a dungeon."
When the chief baker saw that Joseph had given the first dream such a positive interpretation, he said to Joseph, “I had a dream, too. In my dream there were three baskets of white pastries stacked on my head.16When the chief baker saw that the interpretation of the first dream was favorable, he said to Joseph, "I also appeared in my dream and there were three baskets of white bread on my head.
The top basket contained all kinds of pastries for Pharaoh, but the birds came and ate them from the basket on my head.”17In the top basket there were baked goods of every kind for Pharaoh, but the birds were eating them from the basket that was on my head."
“This is what the dream means,” Joseph told him. “The three baskets also represent three days.18Joseph replied, "This is its meaning: The three baskets represent three days.
Three days from now Pharaoh will lift you up and impale your body on a pole. Then birds will come and peck away at your flesh.”19In three more days Pharaoh will decapitate you and impale you on a pole. Then the birds will eat your flesh from you."
Pharaoh’s birthday came three days later, and he prepared a banquet for all his officials and staff. He summoned his chief cup-bearer and chief baker to join the other officials.20On the third day it was Pharaoh's birthday, so he gave a feast for all his servants. He "lifted up" the head of the chief cupbearer and the head of the chief baker in the midst of his servants.
He then restored the chief cup-bearer to his former position, so he could again hand Pharaoh his cup.21He restored the chief cupbearer to his former position so that he placed the cup in Pharaoh's hand,
But Pharaoh impaled the chief baker, just as Joseph had predicted when he interpreted his dream.22but the chief baker he impaled, just as Joseph had predicted.
Pharaoh’s chief cup-bearer, however, forgot all about Joseph, never giving him another thought.23But the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph--he forgot him.
