When David was settled in his palace, he summoned Nathan the prophet. “Look,” David said, “I am living in a beautiful cedar palace, but the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant is out there under a tent!” | 1And it came about, when David dwelt in his house, that David said to Nathan the prophet, "Behold, I am dwelling in a house of cedar, but the ark of the covenant of the LORD is under curtains." |
Nathan replied to David, “Do whatever you have in mind, for God is with you.” | 2Then Nathan said to David, "Do all that is in your heart, for God is with you." |
But that same night God said to Nathan, | 3It came about the same night that the word of God came to Nathan, saying, |
“Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD has declared: You are not the one to build a house for me to live in. | 4"Go and tell David My servant, 'Thus says the LORD, "You shall not build a house for Me to dwell in; |
I have never lived in a house, from the day I brought the Israelites out of Egypt until this very day. My home has always been a tent, moving from one place to another in a Tabernacle. | 5for I have not dwelt in a house since the day that I brought up Israel to this day, but I have gone from tent to tent and from one dwelling place to another. |
Yet no matter where I have gone with the Israelites, I have never once complained to Israel’s leaders, the shepherds of my people. I have never asked them, “Why haven’t you built me a beautiful cedar house?”’ | 6"In all places where I have walked with all Israel, have I spoken a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd My people, saying, 'Why have you not built for Me a house of cedar?'"' |
“Now go and say to my servant David, ‘This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has declared: I took you from tending sheep in the pasture and selected you to be the leader of my people Israel. | 7"Now, therefore, thus shall you say to My servant David, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts, "I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be leader over My people Israel. |
I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have destroyed all your enemies before your eyes. Now I will make your name as famous as anyone who has ever lived on the earth! | 8"I have been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make you a name like the name of the great ones who are in the earth. |
And I will provide a homeland for my people Israel, planting them in a secure place where they will never be disturbed. Evil nations won’t oppress them as they’ve done in the past, | 9"I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and not be moved again; and the wicked will not waste them anymore as formerly, |
starting from the time I appointed judges to rule my people Israel. And I will defeat all your enemies. “‘Furthermore, I declare that the LORD will build a house for you—a dynasty of kings! | 10even from the day that I commanded judges to be over My people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I tell you that the LORD will build a house for you. |
For when you die and join your ancestors, I will raise up one of your descendants, one of your sons, and I will make his kingdom strong. | 11"When your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, that I will set up one of your descendants after you, who will be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. |
He is the one who will build a house—a temple—for me. And I will secure his throne forever. | 12"He shall build for Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. |
I will be his father, and he will be my son. I will never take my favor from him as I took it from the one who ruled before you. | 13"I will be his father and he shall be My son; and I will not take My lovingkindness away from him, as I took it from him who was before you. |
I will confirm him as king over my house and my kingdom for all time, and his throne will be secure forever.’” | 14"But I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne shall be established forever."'" |
So Nathan went back to David and told him everything the LORD had said in this vision. David’s Prayer of Thanks | 15According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David. |
Then King David went in and sat before the LORD and prayed, “Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far? | 16Then David the king went in and sat before the LORD and said, "Who am I, O LORD God, and what is my house that You have brought me this far? |
And now, O God, in addition to everything else, you speak of giving your servant a lasting dynasty! You speak as though I were someone very great, O LORD God! | 17"This was a small thing in Your eyes, O God; but You have spoken of Your servant's house for a great while to come, and have regarded me according to the standard of a man of high degree, O LORD God. |
“What more can I say to you about the way you have honored me? You know what your servant is really like. | 18"What more can David still say to You concerning the honor bestowed on Your servant? For You know Your servant. |
For the sake of your servant, O LORD, and according to your will, you have done all these great things and have made them known. | 19"O LORD, for Your servant's sake, and according to Your own heart, You have wrought all this greatness, to make known all these great things. |
“O LORD, there is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you! | 20"O LORD, there is none like You, nor is there any God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears. |
What other nation on earth is like your people Israel? What other nation, O God, have you redeemed from slavery to be your own people? You made a great name for yourself when you redeemed your people from Egypt. You performed awesome miracles and drove out the nations that stood in their way. | 21"And what one nation in the earth is like Your people Israel, whom God went to redeem for Himself as a people, to make You a name by great and terrible things, in driving out nations from before Your people, whom You redeemed out of Egypt? |
You chose Israel to be your very own people forever, and you, O LORD, became their God. | 22"For Your people Israel You made Your own people forever, and You, O LORD, became their God. |
“And now, O LORD, I am your servant; do as you have promised concerning me and my family. May it be a promise that will last forever. | 23"Now, O LORD, let the word that You have spoken concerning Your servant and concerning his house be established forever, and do as You have spoken. |
And may your name be established and honored forever so that everyone will say, ‘The LORD of Heaven’s Armies, the God of Israel, is Israel’s God!’ And may the house of your servant David continue before you forever. | 24"Let Your name be established and magnified forever, saying, 'The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel; and the house of David Your servant is established before You.' |
“O my God, I have been bold enough to pray to you because you have revealed to your servant that you will build a house for him—a dynasty of kings! | 25"For You, O my God, have revealed to Your servant that You will build for him a house; therefore Your servant has found courage to pray before You. |
For you are God, O LORD. And you have promised these good things to your servant. | 26"Now, O LORD, You are God, and have promised this good thing to Your servant. |
And now, it has pleased you to bless the house of your servant, so that it will continue forever before you. For when you grant a blessing, O LORD, it is an eternal blessing!” | 27"And now it has pleased You to bless the house of Your servant, that it may continue forever before You; for You, O LORD, have blessed, and it is blessed forever." |
