Psalm 73
NLT Parallel ISV [BSB CSB ESV HCS KJV ISV NAS NET NIV NLT HEB]
New Living TranslationInternational Standard Version
Truly God is good to Israel, to those whose hearts are pure.1God is indeed good to Israel, to those pure in heart.
But as for me, I almost lost my footing. My feet were slipping, and I was almost gone.2Now as for me, my feet nearly stumbled, as I almost lost my step.
For I envied the proud when I saw them prosper despite their wickedness.3For I was envious of the proud when I observed the prosperity of the wicked.
They seem to live such painless lives; their bodies are so healthy and strong.4For there is no struggle at their deaths, and their bodies are healthy.
They don’t have troubles like other people; they’re not plagued with problems like everyone else.5They do not experience problems common to ordinary people; they aren't afflicted as others are.
They wear pride like a jeweled necklace and clothe themselves with cruelty.6Therefore pride is their necklace and violence covers them like a garment.
These fat cats have everything their hearts could ever wish for!7Their eyes bulge from obesity and the imaginations of their mind cross the border into sin.
They scoff and speak only evil; in their pride they seek to crush others.8In their mockery they speak evil; from their arrogant position they speak oppression.
They boast against the very heavens, and their words strut throughout the earth.9They choose to speak against heaven; while they talk about things on earth.
And so the people are dismayed and confused, drinking in all their words.10Therefore God's people return there and drink it all in like water until they're satiated.
“What does God know?” they ask. “Does the Most High even know what’s happening?”11Then they say, "How can God know? Does the Most High have knowledge?"
Look at these wicked people— enjoying a life of ease while their riches multiply.12Just look at these wicked people! They're perpetually carefree as they increase their wealth.
Did I keep my heart pure for nothing? Did I keep myself innocent for no reason?13I kept my heart pure for nothing and kept my hands clean from guilt.
I get nothing but trouble all day long; every morning brings me pain.14For I suffer all day long and I am punished every morning.
If I had really spoken this way to others, I would have been a traitor to your people.15If I say, "I will talk like this," I would betray a generation of your children.
So I tried to understand why the wicked prosper. But what a difficult task it is!16When I tried to understand this, it was too difficult for me
Then I went into your sanctuary, O God, and I finally understood the destiny of the wicked.17until I entered the sanctuaries of God. Then I understood their destiny.
Truly, you put them on a slippery path and send them sliding over the cliff to destruction.18You have certainly set them in slippery places; you will make them fall to their ruin.
In an instant they are destroyed, completely swept away by terrors.19How desolate they quickly become, completely destroyed by calamities.
When you arise, O Lord, you will laugh at their silly ideas as a person laughs at dreams in the morning.20Like a dream when one awakens, Lord, you will despise their image when you arise.
Then I realized that my heart was bitter, and I was all torn up inside.21When I chose to be bitter I was emotionally pained.
I was so foolish and ignorant— I must have seemed like a senseless animal to you.22Then, I was too stupid and didn't realize I was acting like a wild animal with you.
Yet I still belong to you; you hold my right hand.23But now I am always with you, for you keep holding my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.24You will guide me with your wise advice, and later you will receive me with honor.
Whom have I in heaven but you? I desire you more than anything on earth.25Whom do I have in heaven but you? I desire nothing on this earth.
My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever.26My body and mind may fail, but God is my strength and my portion forever.
Those who desert him will perish, for you destroy those who abandon you.27Those far from you will perish; you will destroy those who are unfaithful to you.
But as for me, how good it is to be near God! I have made the Sovereign LORD my shelter, and I will tell everyone about the wonderful things you do.28As for me, how good for me it is that God is near! I have made the Lord GOD my refuge so I can tell about all your deeds.
