These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. | 1The proverbs of David's son Solomon, king of Israel. |
Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline, to help them understand the insights of the wise. | 2These proverbs are for gaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; |
Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair. | 3for acquiring the discipline that produces wise behavior, righteousness, justice, and upright living; |
These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young. | 4for giving prudence to the naïve, and knowledge and discretion to the young. |
Let the wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. Let those with understanding receive guidance | 5Let the wise listen and increase their learning; let the person of understanding receive guidance |
by exploring the meaning in these proverbs and parables, the words of the wise and their riddles. | 6in understanding proverbs, clever sayings, words of the wise, and their riddles. |
Fear of the LORD is the foundation of true knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. A Father’s Exhortation: Acquire Wisdom | 7The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. |
My child, listen when your father corrects you. Don’t neglect your mother’s instruction. | 8My son, listen to your father's instruction, and do not let go of your mother's teaching. |
What you learn from them will crown you with grace and be a chain of honor around your neck. | 9They will be a graceful wreath for your head and a chain for your neck. |
My child, if sinners entice you, turn your back on them! | 10My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent. |
They may say, “Come and join us. Let’s hide and kill someone! Just for fun, let’s ambush the innocent! | 11If they say, "Come with us! Let's lie in wait for blood; let's ambush some innocent person for no reason at all. |
Let’s swallow them alive, like the grave ; let’s swallow them whole, like those who go down to the pit of death. | 12Let's swallow them alive like Sheol, and whole like those who go down into the Pit. |
Think of the great things we’ll get! We’ll fill our houses with all the stuff we take. | 13We'll find all kinds of valuable wealth, and we'll fill our houses with spoil. |
Come, throw in your lot with us; we’ll all share the loot.” | 14Throw your lot in with us, and all of us will have one purse." |
My child, don’t go along with them! Stay far away from their paths. | 15My son, do not go along with them, and keep your feet away from their paths! |
They rush to commit evil deeds. They hurry to commit murder. | 16For they run toward evil; these enticers shed blood without hesitation. |
If a bird sees a trap being set, it knows to stay away. | 17Look, it is useless to spread a net in full view of all the birds, |
But these people set an ambush for themselves; they are trying to get themselves killed. | 18but these people lie in wait for their own blood. They ambush only themselves. |
Such is the fate of all who are greedy for money; it robs them of life. Wisdom Shouts in the Streets | 19Such is the way of all those who seek illicit gain— it takes away the lives of those who possess it. |
Wisdom shouts in the streets. She cries out in the public square. | 20Wisdom cries out in the street; she raises her voice in the public squares. |
She calls to the crowds along the main street, to those gathered in front of the city gate: | 21She calls out at the busiest part of the noisy streets, and at the entrance to the gates of the city she utters her words: |
“How long, you simpletons, will you insist on being simpleminded? How long will you mockers relish your mocking? How long will you fools hate knowledge? | 22"You naïve ones, how long will you love naivete? And how long will scoffers delight in scoffing or fools hate knowledge?" |
Come and listen to my counsel. I’ll share my heart with you and make you wise. | 23Return to my correction! Look, I will pour out my spirit on you, and I will make my words known to you. |
“I called you so often, but you wouldn’t come. I reached out to you, but you paid no attention. | 24"Because I called out to you and you refused to respond— I appealed, but no one paid attention— |
You ignored my advice and rejected the correction I offered. | 25because you neglected all my advice and did not want my correction, |
So I will laugh when you are in trouble! I will mock you when disaster overtakes you— | 26I will laugh at your calamity. I will mock when what you fear comes, |
when calamity overtakes you like a storm, when disaster engulfs you like a cyclone, and anguish and distress overwhelm you. | 27when what you dread comes like a storm, and your calamity comes on like a whirlwind, when distress and anguish come upon you. |
“When they cry for help, I will not answer. Though they anxiously search for me, they will not find me. | 28"Then they will call out to me, but I will not answer; they will seek me diligently, but they will not find me. |
For they hated knowledge and chose not to fear the LORD. | 29"Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the LORD; |
They rejected my advice and paid no attention when I corrected them. | 30they did not want my advice, and they rejected all my correction. |
Therefore, they must eat the bitter fruit of living their own way, choking on their own schemes. | 31They will eat the fruit of their way, and they will be filled with their own devices. |
For simpletons turn away from me—to death. Fools are destroyed by their own complacency. | 32Indeed, the waywardness of the naïve will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them. |
But all who listen to me will live in peace, untroubled by fear of harm.” | 33"But the person who listens to me will live safely and will be secure from the fear of evil." |
