| 1“Suppose a man marries a woman but she does not please him. Having discovered something wrong with her, he writes a document of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house. | 1"If a man marries a woman, but she becomes displeasing to him because he finds something indecent about her, he may write her a divorce certificate, hand it to her, and send her away from his house. |
| 2When she leaves his house, she is free to marry another man. | 2If after leaving his house she goes and becomes another man's wife, |
| 3But if the second husband also turns against her, writes a document of divorce, hands it to her, and sends her away, or if he dies, | 3and the second man hates her, writes her a divorce certificate, hands it to her, and sends her away from his house or if he dies, |
| 4the first husband may not marry her again, for she has been defiled. That would be detestable to the LORD. You must not bring guilt upon the land the LORD your God is giving you as a special possession. | 4the first husband who sent her away may not marry her again after she has been defiled, because that would be detestable to the LORD. You must not bring guilt on the land the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance. |
| 5“A newly married man must not be drafted into the army or be given any other official responsibilities. He must be free to spend one year at home, bringing happiness to the wife he has married. | 5"When a man takes a bride, he must not go out with the army or be liable for any duty. He is free to stay at home for one year, so that he can bring joy to the wife he has married. |
| 6“It is wrong to take a set of millstones, or even just the upper millstone, as security for a loan, for the owner uses it to make a living. | 6"Do not take a pair of grindstones or even the upper millstone as security for a debt, because that is like taking a life as security. |
| 7“If anyone kidnaps a fellow Israelite and treats him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. In this way, you will purge the evil from among you. | 7"If a man is discovered kidnapping one of his Israelite brothers, whether he treats him as a slave or sells him, the kidnapper must die. You must purge the evil from you. |
| 8“In all cases involving serious skin diseases, be careful to follow the instructions of the Levitical priests; obey all the commands I have given them. | 8"Be careful with a person who has a case of serious skin disease, following carefully everything the Levitical priests instruct you to do. Be careful to do as I have commanded them. |
| 9Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam as you were coming from Egypt. | 9Remember what the LORD your God did to Miriam on the journey after you left Egypt. |
| 10“If you lend anything to your neighbor, do not enter his house to pick up the item he is giving as security. | 10"When you make a loan of any kind to your neighbor, do not enter his house to collect what he offers as security. |
| 11You must wait outside while he goes in and brings it out to you. | 11Stand outside while the man you are making the loan to brings the security out to you. |
| 12If your neighbor is poor and gives you his cloak as security for a loan, do not keep the cloak overnight. | 12If he is a poor man, do not sleep with the garment he has given as security. |
| 13Return the cloak to its owner by sunset so he can stay warm through the night and bless you, and the LORD your God will count you as righteous. | 13Be sure to return it to him at sunset. Then he will sleep in it and bless you, and this will be counted as righteousness to you before the LORD your God. |
| 14“Never take advantage of poor and destitute laborers, whether they are fellow Israelites or foreigners living in your towns. | 14"Do not oppress a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether one of your Israelite brothers or one of the resident aliens in a town in your land. |
| 15You must pay them their wages each day before sunset because they are poor and are counting on it. If you don’t, they might cry out to the LORD against you, and it would be counted against you as sin. | 15You are to pay him his wages each day before the sun sets, because he is poor and depends on them. Otherwise he will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be held guilty. |
| 16“Parents must not be put to death for the sins of their children, nor children for the sins of their parents. Those deserving to die must be put to death for their own crimes. | 16"Fathers are not to be put to death for their children, and children are not to be put to death for their fathers; each person will be put to death for his own sin. |
| 17“True justice must be given to foreigners living among you and to orphans, and you must never accept a widow’s garment as security for her debt. | 17Do not deny justice to a resident alien or fatherless child, and do not take a widow's garment as security. |
| 18Always remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the LORD your God redeemed you from your slavery. That is why I have given you this command. | 18Remember that you were a slave in Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you from there. Therefore I am commanding you to do this. |
| 19“When you are harvesting your crops and forget to bring in a bundle of grain from your field, don’t go back to get it. Leave it for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. Then the LORD your God will bless you in all you do. | 19"When you reap the harvest in your field, and you forget a sheaf in the field, do not go back to get it. It is to be left for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow, so that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. |
| 20When you beat the olives from your olive trees, don’t go over the boughs twice. Leave the remaining olives for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. | 20When you knock down the fruit from your olive tree, do not go over the branches again. What remains will be for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow. |
| 21When you gather the grapes in your vineyard, don’t glean the vines after they are picked. Leave the remaining grapes for the foreigners, orphans, and widows. | 21When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left. What remains will be for the resident alien, the fatherless, and the widow. |
| 22Remember that you were slaves in the land of Egypt. That is why I am giving you this command. | 22Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt. Therefore I am commanding you to do this. |
