Then the Sovereign LORD showed me another vision. In it I saw a basket filled with ripe fruit. | 1The Lord GOD showed me this: a basket of summer fruit. |
“What do you see, Amos?” he asked. I replied, “A basket full of ripe fruit.” Then the LORD said, “Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again. | 2He asked me, "What do you see, Amos?" I replied, "A basket of summer fruit." The LORD said to me, "The end has come for my people Israel; I will no longer spare them. |
In that day the singing in the temple will turn to wailing. Dead bodies will be scattered everywhere. They will be carried out of the city in silence. I, the Sovereign LORD, have spoken!” | 3In that day the temple songs will become wailing"--this is the Lord GOD's declaration. "Many dead bodies, thrown everywhere! Silence!" |
Listen to this, you who rob the poor and trample down the needy! | 4Hear this, you who trample on the needy and do away with the poor of the land, |
You can’t wait for the Sabbath day to be over and the religious festivals to end so you can get back to cheating the helpless. You measure out grain with dishonest measures and cheat the buyer with dishonest scales. | 5asking, "When will the New Moon be over so we may sell grain, and the Sabbath, so we may market wheat? We can reduce the measure while increasing the price and cheat with dishonest scales. |
And you mix the grain you sell with chaff swept from the floor. Then you enslave poor people for one piece of silver or a pair of sandals. | 6We can buy the poor with silver and the needy for a pair of sandals and even sell the chaff!" |
Now the LORD has sworn this oath by his own name, the Pride of Israel : “I will never forget the wicked things you have done! | 7The LORD has sworn by the Pride of Jacob: I will never forget all their deeds. |
The earth will tremble for your deeds, and everyone will mourn. The ground will rise like the Nile River at floodtime; it will heave up, then sink again. | 8Because of this, won't the land quake and all who dwell in it mourn? All of it will rise like the Nile; it will surge and then subside like the Nile in Egypt. |
“In that day,” says the Sovereign LORD, “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth while it is still day. | 9And in that day--this is the declaration of the Lord GOD--I will make the sun go down at noon; I will darken the land in the daytime. |
I will turn your celebrations into times of mourning and your singing into weeping. You will wear funeral clothes and shave your heads to show your sorrow— as if your only son had died. How very bitter that day will be! | 10I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; I will cause everyone to wear sackcloth and every head to be shaved. I will make that grief like mourning for an only son and its outcome like a bitter day. |
“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign LORD, “when I will send a famine on the land— not a famine of bread or water but of hearing the words of the LORD. | 11Look, the days are coming--this is the declaration of the Lord GOD--when I will send a famine through the land: not a famine of bread or a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. |
People will stagger from sea to sea and wander from border to border searching for the word of the LORD, but they will not find it. | 12People will stagger from sea to sea and roam from north to east seeking the word of the LORD, but they will not find it. |
Beautiful girls and strong young men will grow faint in that day, thirsting for the LORD’s word. | 13In that day the beautiful young women, the young men also, will faint from thirst. |
And those who swear by the shameful idols of Samaria— who take oaths in the name of the god of Dan and make vows in the name of the god of Beersheba — they will all fall down, never to rise again.” | 14Those who swear by the guilt of Samaria and say, "As your god lives, Dan," or, "As the way of Beer-sheba lives"--they will fall, never to rise again. |
