New Living Translation | Berean Study Bible |
One day a petition was presented by the daughters of Zelophehad—Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Their father, Zelophehad, was a descendant of Hepher son of Gilead, son of Makir, son of Manasseh, son of Joseph. | 1Now the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. These were the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. They approached |
These women stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the tribal leaders, and the entire community at the entrance of the Tabernacle. | 2the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the leaders, and the whole congregation, and said, |
“Our father died in the wilderness,” they said. “He was not among Korah’s followers, who rebelled against the LORD; he died because of his own sin. But he had no sons. | 3“Our father died in the wilderness, but he was not among the followers of Korah who gathered together against the LORD. Instead, he died because of his own sin, and he had no sons. |
Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan just because he had no sons? Give us property along with the rest of our relatives.” | 4Why should the name of our father disappear from his clan because he had no sons? Give us property among our father’s brothers.” |
So Moses brought their case before the LORD. | 5So Moses brought their case before the LORD, |
And the LORD replied to Moses, | 6and the LORD answered him, |
“The claim of the daughters of Zelophehad is legitimate. You must give them a grant of land along with their father’s relatives. Assign them the property that would have been given to their father. | 7“The daughters of Zelophehad speak correctly. You certainly must give them property as an inheritance among their father’s brothers, and transfer their father’s inheritance to them. |
“And give the following instructions to the people of Israel: If a man dies and has no son, then give his inheritance to his daughters. | 8Furthermore, you shall say to the Israelites, ‘If a man dies and leaves no son, you are to transfer his inheritance to his daughter. |
And if he has no daughter either, transfer his inheritance to his brothers. | 9If he has no daughter, give his inheritance to his brothers. |
If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. | 10If he has no brothers, give his inheritance to his father’s brothers. |
But if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the nearest relative in his clan. This is a legal requirement for the people of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses.” Joshua Chosen to Lead Israel | 11And if his father has no brothers, give his inheritance to the next of kin from his clan, that he may take possession of it. This is to be a statutory ordinance for the Israelites, as the LORD has commanded Moses.’ ” |
One day the LORD said to Moses, “Climb one of the mountains east of the river, and look out over the land I have given the people of Israel. | 12Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go up this mountain of the Abarim range and see the land that I have given the Israelites. |
After you have seen it, you will die like your brother, Aaron, | 13After you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as your brother Aaron was; |
for you both rebelled against my instructions in the wilderness of Zin. When the people of Israel rebelled, you failed to demonstrate my holiness to them at the waters.” (These are the waters of Meribah at Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin.) | 14for when the congregation contended in the Wilderness of Zin, both of you rebelled against My command to show My holiness in their sight regarding the waters.” Those were the waters of Meribah in Kadesh, in the Wilderness of Zin. |
Then Moses said to the LORD, | 15So Moses appealed to the LORD, |
“O LORD, you are the God who gives breath to all creatures. Please appoint a new man as leader for the community. | 16“May the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation |
Give them someone who will guide them wherever they go and will lead them into battle, so the community of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” | 17who will go out and come in before them, and who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of the LORD will not be like sheep without a shepherd.” |
The LORD replied, “Take Joshua son of Nun, who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him. | 18And the LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man with the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him. |
Present him to Eleazar the priest before the whole community, and publicly commission him to lead the people. | 19Have him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, and commission him in their sight. |
Transfer some of your authority to him so the whole community of Israel will obey him. | 20Confer on him some of your authority, so that the whole congregation of Israel will obey him. |
When direction from the LORD is needed, Joshua will stand before Eleazar the priest, who will use the Urim—one of the sacred lots cast before the LORD—to determine his will. This is how Joshua and the rest of the community of Israel will determine everything they should do.” | 21He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who will seek counsel for him before the LORD by the judgment of the Urim. At his command, he and all the Israelites with him—the entire congregation—will go out and come in.” |
So Moses did as the LORD commanded. He presented Joshua to Eleazar the priest and the whole community. | 22Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. He took Joshua, had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation, |
Moses laid his hands on him and commissioned him to lead the people, just as the LORD had commanded through Moses. | 23and laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD had instructed through Moses. |
