1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses: |
2“Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. | 2"Speak to the whole congregation of the Israelites and tell them, 'You must be holy because I, the LORD your God, am holy. |
3‘Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. | 3Each of you must respect his mother and his father, and you must keep my Sabbaths. I am the LORD your God. |
4‘Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves molded gods: I am the LORD your God. | 4Do not turn to idols, and you must not make for yourselves gods of cast metal. I am the LORD your God. |
5‘And if you offer a sacrifice of a peace offering to the LORD, you shall offer it of your own free will. | 5"'When you sacrifice a peace offering sacrifice to the LORD, you must sacrifice it so that it is accepted for you. |
6It shall be eaten the same day you offer it, and on the next day. And if any remains until the third day, it shall be burned in the fire. | 6It must be eaten on the day of your sacrifice and on the following day, but what is left over until the third day must be burned up. |
7And if it is eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination. It shall not be accepted. | 7If, however, it is eaten on the third day, it is spoiled, it will not be accepted, |
8Therefore everyone who eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned the hallowed offering of the LORD; and that person shall be cut off from his people. | 8and the one who eats it will bear his punishment for iniquity because he has profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person will be cut off from his people. |
9‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. | 9"'When you gather in the harvest of your land, you must not completely harvest the corner of your field, and you must not gather up the gleanings of your harvest. |
10And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the LORD your God. | 10You must not pick your vineyard bare, and you must not gather up the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You must leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the LORD your God. |
11‘You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. | 11"'You must not steal, you must not tell lies, and you must not deal falsely with your fellow citizen. |
12And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD. | 12You must not swear falsely in my name, so that you do not profane the name of your God. I am the LORD. |
13‘You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning. | 13You must not oppress your neighbor or commit robbery against him. You must not withhold the wages of the hired laborer overnight until morning. |
14You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shall fear your God: I am the LORD. | 14You must not curse a deaf person or put a stumbling block in front of a blind person. You must fear your God; I am the LORD. |
15‘You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor. | 15"'You must not deal unjustly in judgment: you must neither show partiality to the poor nor honor the rich. You must judge your fellow citizen fairly. |
16You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD. | 16You must not go about as a slanderer among your people. You must not stand idly by when your neighbor's life is at stake. I am the LORD. |
17‘You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. | 17You must not hate your brother in your heart. You must surely reprove your fellow citizen so that you do not incur sin on account of him. |
18You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. | 18You must not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people, but you must love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD. |
19‘You shall keep My statutes. You shall not let your livestock breed with another kind. You shall not sow your field with mixed seed. Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you. | 19You must keep my statutes. You must not allow two different kinds of your animals to breed, you must not sow your field with two different kinds of seed, and you must not wear a garment made of two different kinds of fabric. |
20‘Whoever lies carnally with a woman who is betrothed to a man as a concubine, and who has not at all been redeemed nor given her freedom, for this there shall be scourging; but they shall not be put to death, because she was not free. | 20"'When a man has sexual intercourse with a woman, although she is a slave woman designated for another man and she has not yet been ransomed, or freedom has not been granted to her, there will be an obligation to pay compensation. They must not be put to death, because she was not free. |
21And he shall bring his trespass offering to the LORD, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, a ram as a trespass offering. | 21He must bring his guilt offering to the LORD at the entrance of the Meeting Tent, a guilt offering ram, |
22The priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he has committed. And the sin which he has committed shall be forgiven him. | 22and the priest is to make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering before the LORD for his sin that he has committed, and he will be forgiven of his sin that he has committed. |
23‘When you come into the land, and have planted all kinds of trees for food, then you shall count their fruit as uncircumcised. Three years it shall be as uncircumcised to you. It shall not be eaten. | 23"'When you enter the land and plant any fruit tree, you must consider its fruit to be forbidden. Three years it will be forbidden to you; it must not be eaten. |
24But in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, a praise to the LORD. | 24In the fourth year all its fruit will be holy, praise offerings to the LORD. |
25And in the fifth year you may eat its fruit, that it may yield to you its increase: I am the LORD your God. | 25Then in the fifth year you may eat its fruit to add its produce to your harvest. I am the LORD your God. |
26‘You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying. | 26"'You must not eat anything with the blood still in it. You must not practice either divination or soothsaying. |
27You shall not shave around the sides of your head, nor shall you disfigure the edges of your beard. | 27You must not round off the corners of the hair on your head or ruin the corners of your beard. |
28You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD. | 28You must not slash your body for a dead person or incise a tattoo on yourself. I am the LORD. |
29‘Do not prostitute your daughter, to cause her to be a harlot, lest the land fall into harlotry, and the land become full of wickedness. | 29Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, so that the land does not practice prostitution and become full of lewdness. |
30‘You shall keep My Sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary: I am the LORD. | 30"'You must keep my Sabbaths and fear my sanctuary. I am the LORD. |
31‘Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. | 31Do not turn to the spirits of the dead and do not seek familiar spirits to become unclean by them. I am the LORD your God. |
32‘You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the LORD. | 32You must stand up in the presence of the aged, honor the presence of an elder, and fear your God. I am the LORD. |
33‘And if a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him. | 33When a foreigner resides with you in your land, you must not oppress him. |
34The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. | 34The foreigner who resides with you must be to you like a native citizen among you; so you must love him as yourself, because you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. I am the LORD your God. |
35‘You shall do no injustice in judgment, in measurement of length, weight, or volume. | 35You must not do injustice in the regulation of measures, whether of length, weight, or volume. |
36You shall have honest scales, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. | 36You must have honest balances, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin. I am the LORD your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt. |
37‘Therefore you shall observe all My statutes and all My judgments, and perform them: I am the LORD.’ ” | 37You must be sure to obey all my statutes and regulations. I am the LORD.'" |
