| 1And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, | 1The LORD spoke to Moses: " |
| 2“Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say to them: ‘You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. | 2Speak to the entire Israelite community and tell them: Be holy because I, Yahweh your God, am holy." |
| 3‘Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths: I am the LORD your God. | 3Each of you is to respect his mother and father. You are to keep My Sabbaths; I am Yahweh your God. |
| 4‘Do not turn to idols, nor make for yourselves molded gods: I am the LORD your God. | 4Do not turn to idols or make cast images of gods for yourselves; I am Yahweh your God." |
| 5‘And if you offer a sacrifice of a peace offering to the LORD, you shall offer it of your own free will. | 5When you offer a fellowship sacrifice to the LORD, sacrifice it so that you may be accepted. |
| 6It shall be eaten the same day you offer it, and on the next day. And if any remains until the third day, it shall be burned in the fire. | 6It is to be eaten on the day you sacrifice it or on the next day, but what remains on the third day must be burned up. |
| 7And if it is eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination. It shall not be accepted. | 7If any is eaten on the third day, it is a repulsive thing; it will not be accepted. |
| 8Therefore everyone who eats it shall bear his iniquity, because he has profaned the hallowed offering of the LORD; and that person shall be cut off from his people. | 8Anyone who eats it will bear his punishment, for he has profaned what is holy to the LORD. That person must be cut off from his people." |
| 9‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. | 9When you reap the harvest of your land, you are not to reap to the very edge of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. |
| 10And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the LORD your God. | 10You must not strip your vineyard bare or gather its fallen grapes. Leave them for the poor and the foreign resident; I am Yahweh your God." |
| 11‘You shall not steal, nor deal falsely, nor lie to one another. | 11You must not steal. You must not act deceptively or lie to one another. |
| 12And you shall not swear by My name falsely, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the LORD. | 12You must not swear falsely by My name, profaning the name of your God; I am Yahweh." |
| 13‘You shall not cheat your neighbor, nor rob him. The wages of him who is hired shall not remain with you all night until morning. | 13You must not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages due a hired hand must not remain with you until morning. |
| 14You shall not curse the deaf, nor put a stumbling block before the blind, but shall fear your God: I am the LORD. | 14You must not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but you are to fear your God; I am Yahweh." |
| 15‘You shall do no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor, nor honor the person of the mighty. In righteousness you shall judge your neighbor. | 15You must not act unjustly when deciding a case. Do not be partial to the poor or give preference to the rich; judge your neighbor fairly. |
| 16You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the LORD. | 16You must not go about spreading slander among your people; you must not jeopardize your neighbor's life; I am Yahweh." |
| 17‘You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, and not bear sin because of him. | 17You must not harbor hatred against your brother. Rebuke your neighbor directly, and you will not incur guilt because of him. |
| 18You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. | 18Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against members of your community, but love your neighbor as yourself; I am Yahweh." |
| 19‘You shall keep My statutes. You shall not let your livestock breed with another kind. You shall not sow your field with mixed seed. Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you. | 19You are to keep My statutes. You must not crossbreed two different kinds of your livestock, sow your fields with two kinds of seed, or put on a garment made of two kinds of material." |
| 20‘Whoever lies carnally with a woman who is betrothed to a man as a concubine, and who has not at all been redeemed nor given her freedom, for this there shall be scourging; but they shall not be put to death, because she was not free. | 20If a man has sexual intercourse with a woman who is a slave designated for another man, but she has not been redeemed or given her freedom, there must be punishment. They are not to be put to death, because she had not been freed. |
| 21And he shall bring his trespass offering to the LORD, to the door of the tabernacle of meeting, a ram as a trespass offering. | 21However, he must bring a ram as his restitution offering to the LORD at the entrance to the tent of meeting. |
| 22The priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering before the LORD for his sin which he has committed. And the sin which he has committed shall be forgiven him. | 22The priest will make atonement on his behalf before the LORD with the ram of the restitution offering for the sin he has committed, and he will be forgiven for the sin he committed." |
| 23‘When you come into the land, and have planted all kinds of trees for food, then you shall count their fruit as uncircumcised. Three years it shall be as uncircumcised to you. It shall not be eaten. | 23When you come into the land and plant any kind of tree for food, you are to consider the fruit forbidden. It will be forbidden to you for three years; it is not to be eaten. |
| 24But in the fourth year all its fruit shall be holy, a praise to the LORD. | 24In the fourth year all its fruit must be consecrated as a praise offering to the LORD. |
| 25And in the fifth year you may eat its fruit, that it may yield to you its increase: I am the LORD your God. | 25But in the fifth year you may eat its fruit. In this way its yield will increase for you; I am Yahweh your God." |
| 26‘You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying. | 26You are not to eat anything with blood in it. You are not to practice divination or sorcery. |
| 27You shall not shave around the sides of your head, nor shall you disfigure the edges of your beard. | 27You are not to cut off the hair at the sides of your head or mar the edge of your beard. |
| 28You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD. | 28You are not to make gashes on your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves; I am Yahweh." |
| 29‘Do not prostitute your daughter, to cause her to be a harlot, lest the land fall into harlotry, and the land become full of wickedness. | 29Do not debase your daughter by making her a prostitute, or the land will be prostituted and filled with depravity. |
| 30‘You shall keep My Sabbaths and reverence My sanctuary: I am the LORD. | 30You must keep My Sabbaths and revere My sanctuary; I am Yahweh." |
| 31‘Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God. | 31Do not turn to mediums or consult spiritists, or you will be defiled by them; I am Yahweh your God." |
| 32‘You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the LORD. | 32You are to rise in the presence of the elderly and honor the old. Fear your God; I am Yahweh." |
| 33‘And if a stranger dwells with you in your land, you shall not mistreat him. | 33When a foreigner lives with you in your land, you must not oppress him. |
| 34The stranger who dwells among you shall be to you as one born among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God. | 34You must regard the foreigner who lives with you as the native-born among you. You are to love him as yourself, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt; I am Yahweh your God." |
| 35‘You shall do no injustice in judgment, in measurement of length, weight, or volume. | 35You must not be unfair in measurements of length, weight, or volume. |
| 36You shall have honest scales, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin: I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. | 36You are to have honest balances, honest weights, an honest dry measure, and an honest liquid measure; I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. |
| 37‘Therefore you shall observe all My statutes and all My judgments, and perform them: I am the LORD.’ ” | 37You must keep all My statutes and all My ordinances and do them; I am Yahweh." |
