A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, on Shigionoth. | 1This is a prayer of Habakkuk the prophet: |
O LORD, I have heard Your speech and was afraid; O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years! In the midst of the years make it known; In wrath remember mercy. | 2LORD, I have heard the report of what you did; I am awed, LORD, by what you accomplished. In our time repeat those deeds; in our time reveal them again. But when you cause turmoil, remember to show us mercy! |
God came from Teman, The Holy One from Mount Paran. Selah His glory covered the heavens, And the earth was full of His praise. | 3God comes from Teman, the sovereign one from Mount Paran. Selah. His splendor covers the skies, his glory fills the earth. |
His brightness was like the light; He had rays flashing from His hand, And there His power was hidden. | 4He is as bright as lightning; a two-pronged lightning bolt flashes from his hand. This is the outward display of his power. |
Before Him went pestilence, And fever followed at His feet. | 5Plague goes before him; pestilence marches right behind him. |
He stood and measured the earth; He looked and startled the nations. And the everlasting mountains were scattered, The perpetual hills bowed. His ways are everlasting. | 6He takes his battle position and shakes the earth; with a mere look he frightens the nations. The ancient mountains disintegrate; the primeval hills are flattened. He travels on the ancient roads. |
I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction; The curtains of the land of Midian trembled. | 7I see the tents of Cushan overwhelmed by trouble; the tent curtains of the land of Midian are shaking. |
O LORD, were You displeased with the rivers, Was Your anger against the rivers, Was Your wrath against the sea, That You rode on Your horses, Your chariots of salvation? | 8Is the LORD mad at the rivers? Are you angry with the rivers? Are you enraged at the sea? Is this why you climb into your horse-drawn chariots, your victorious chariots? |
Your bow was made quite ready; Oaths were sworn over Your arrows. Selah You divided the earth with rivers. | 9Your bow is ready for action; you commission your arrows. Selah. You cause flash floods on the earth's surface. |
The mountains saw You and trembled; The overflowing of the water passed by. The deep uttered its voice, And lifted its hands on high. | 10When the mountains see you, they shake. The torrential downpour sweeps through. The great deep shouts out; it lifts its hands high. |
The sun and moon stood still in their habitation; At the light of Your arrows they went, At the shining of Your glittering spear. | 11The sun and moon stand still in their courses; the flash of your arrows drives them away, the bright light of your lightning-quick spear. |
You marched through the land in indignation; You trampled the nations in anger. | 12You furiously stomp on the earth, you angrily trample down the nations. |
You went forth for the salvation of Your people, For salvation with Your Anointed. You struck the head from the house of the wicked, By laying bare from foundation to neck. Selah | 13You march out to deliver your people, to deliver your special servant. You strike the leader of the wicked nation, laying him open from the lower body to the neck. Selah. |
You thrust through with his own arrows The head of his villages. They came out like a whirlwind to scatter me; Their rejoicing was like feasting on the poor in secret. | 14You pierce the heads of his warriors with a spear. They storm forward to scatter us; they shout with joy as if they were plundering the poor with no opposition. |
You walked through the sea with Your horses, Through the heap of great waters. | 15But you trample on the sea with your horses, on the surging, raging waters. |
When I heard, my body trembled; My lips quivered at the voice; Rottenness entered my bones; And I trembled in myself, That I might rest in the day of trouble. When he comes up to the people, He will invade them with his troops. | 16I listened and my stomach churned; the sound made my lips quiver. My frame went limp, as if my bones were decaying, and I shook as I tried to walk. I long for the day of distress to come upon the people who attack us. |
Though the fig tree may not blossom, Nor fruit be on the vines; Though the labor of the olive may fail, And the fields yield no food; Though the flock may be cut off from the fold, And there be no herd in the stalls— | 17When the fig tree does not bud, and there are no grapes on the vines; when the olive trees do not produce, and the fields yield no crops; when the sheep disappear from the pen, and there are no cattle in the stalls, |
Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. | 18I will rejoice because of the LORD; I will be happy because of the God who delivers me! |
The LORD God is my strength; He will make my feet like deer’s feet, And He will make me walk on my high hills. To the Chief Musician. With my stringed instruments. | 19The sovereign LORD is my source of strength. He gives me the agility of a deer; he enables me to negotiate the rugged terrain. (This prayer is for the song leader. It is to be accompanied by stringed instruments.) |
