New King James Version | New American Standard Bible 1995 |
Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly. | 1Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the stomach of the fish, |
And he said: “I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. | 2and he said, "I called out of my distress to the LORD, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. |
For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me. | 3"For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. |
Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ | 4"So I said, 'I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.' |
The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. | 5"Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. |
I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God. | 6"I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD my God. |
“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple. | 7"While I was fainting away, I remembered the LORD, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. |
“Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy. | 8"Those who regard vain idols Forsake their faithfulness, |
But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” | 9But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the LORD." |
So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10Then the LORD commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land. |
