New King James Version | International Standard Version |
Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from the fish’s belly. | 1 Then Jonah prayed to the LORD his God from inside the sea creature. |
And he said: “I cried out to the LORD because of my affliction, And He answered me. “Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice. | 2He said: "I called out to the LORD from the midst of affliction directed at me, and he answered me. From the depths of death I cried out for help; and you heard my cry. |
For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me. | 3You cast me into the deep— into the heart of the sea. Flood waters engulfed me. All your breakers and your waves swirled over me. |
Then I said, ‘I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.’ | 4So I told myself, 'I have been driven away from you. How will I again gaze on your holy Temple?' |
The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head. | 5Flood waters encompassed me, the deep surrounded me while seaweed wrapped around my head. |
I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O LORD, my God. | 6I sank to the roots of the mountains; the earth's prison bars closed around me forever. Yet you resurrect the dead from the Pit, LORD my God! |
“When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the LORD; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple. | 7"As my life was fading away, I remembered the LORD; and my prayer came to you in your holy Temple. |
“Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy. | 8Those who cling to vain idols leave behind the gracious love that could have been theirs. |
But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the LORD.” | 9But as for me, with a voice of thanksgiving I will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance is the LORD's!" |
So the LORD spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. | 10Then the LORD spoke to the sea creature, and it spewed Jonah onto the dry land. |
