Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. | 1Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, because the first heaven and the first earth had disappeared, and the sea was gone. |
Then I, John, saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. | 2I also saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. |
And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. | 3I heard a loud voice from the throne say, "See, the tent of God is among humans! He will make his home with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them, and he will be their God. |
And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” | 4He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There won't be death anymore. There won't be any grief, crying, or pain, because the first things have disappeared." |
Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.” | 5The one sitting on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new!" He said, "Write this: 'These words are trustworthy and true.'" |
And He said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. I will give of the fountain of the water of life freely to him who thirsts. | 6Then he told me, "It has happened! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will freely give a drink from the spring of the water of life to the one who is thirsty. |
He who overcomes shall inherit all things, and I will be his God and he shall be My son. | 7The person who conquers will inherit these things. I will be his God, and he will be my son. |
But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” | 8But people who are cowardly, unfaithful, detestable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars will find themselves in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death." |
Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues came to me and talked with me, saying, “Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” | 9Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came to me and said, "Come! I will show you the bride, the wife of the lamb." |
And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, | 10He carried me away in the Spirit to a large, high mountain and showed me the holy city, Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven. |
having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal. | 11The glory of God was its radiance, and its light was like a valuable gem, like jasper, as clear as crystal. |
Also she had a great and high wall with twelve gates, and twelve angels at the gates, and names written on them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel: | 12It had a large, high wall with twelve gates. Twelve angels were at the gates, and the names of the twelve tribes of Israel were written on the gates. |
three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. | 13There were three gates on the east, three gates on the north, three gates on the south, and three gates on the west. |
Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. | 14The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the lamb were written on them. |
And he who talked with me had a gold reed to measure the city, its gates, and its wall. | 15The angel who was talking to me had a gold measuring rod to measure the city, its gates, and its walls. |
The city is laid out as a square; its length is as great as its breadth. And he measured the city with the reed: twelve thousand furlongs. Its length, breadth, and height are equal. | 16The city was cubic in shape: its length was the same as its width. He measured the city with his rod, and it measured at 12,000 stadia: Its length, width, and height were the same. |
Then he measured its wall: one hundred and forty-four cubits, according to the measure of a man, that is, of an angel. | 17He also measured its wall. According to the human measurement that the angel was using, it was 144 cubits. |
The construction of its wall was of jasper; and the city was pure gold, like clear glass. | 18Its wall was made of jasper. The city was made of pure gold, as clear as glass. |
The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all kinds of precious stones: the first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, | 19The foundations of the city wall were decorated with all kinds of gems: The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, |
the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. | 20the fifth onyx, the sixth carnelian, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth and the twelfth amethyst. |
The twelve gates were twelve pearls: each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of the city was pure gold, like transparent glass. | 21The twelve gates were twelve pearls, and each gate was made of a single pearl. The street of the city was made of pure gold, as clear as glass. |
But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. | 22I saw no temple in it, because the Lord God Almighty and the lamb are its temple. |
The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light. | 23The city doesn't need any sun or moon to give it light, because the glory of God gave it light, and the lamb was its lamp. |
And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it. | 24The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it. |
Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there). | 25Its gates will never be shut at the end of the day—because there will be no night there. |
And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. | 26People will bring the glory and wealth of the nations into it. |
But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life. | 27Nothing unclean, or anyone who does anything detestable, and no one who tells lies will ever enter it. Only those whose names are written in the lamb's Book of Life will enter it. |
