New King James Version | Christian Standard Bible |
Now, brethren, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our gathering together to Him, we ask you, | 1Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to him: We ask you, brothers and sisters, |
not to be soon shaken in mind or troubled, either by spirit or by word or by letter, as if from us, as though the day of Christ had come. | 2not to be easily upset or troubled, either by a prophecy or by a message or by a letter supposedly from us, alleging that the day of the Lord has come. |
Let no one deceive you by any means; for that Day will not come unless the falling away comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of perdition, | 3Don't let anyone deceive you in any way. For that day will not come unless the apostasy comes first and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the man doomed to destruction. |
who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God or that is worshiped, so that he sits as God in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. | 4He opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he sits in God's temple, proclaiming that he himself is God. |
Do you not remember that when I was still with you I told you these things? | 5Don't you remember that when I was still with you I used to tell you about this? |
And now you know what is restraining, that he may be revealed in his own time. | 6And you know what currently restrains him, so that he will be revealed in his time. |
For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way. | 7For the mystery of lawlessness is already at work, but the one now restraining will do so until he is out of the way, |
And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming. | 8and then the lawless one will be revealed. The Lord Jesus will destroy him with the breath of his mouth and will bring him to nothing at the appearance of his coming. |
The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs, and lying wonders, | 9The coming of the lawless one is based on Satan's working, with all kinds of false miracles, signs, and wonders, |
and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved. | 10and with every wicked deception among those who are perishing. They perish because they did not accept the love of the truth and so be saved. |
And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should believe the lie, | 11For this reason God sends them a strong delusion so that they will believe the lie, |
that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness. | 12so that all will be condemned--those who did not believe the truth but delighted in unrighteousness. |
But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth, | 13But we ought to thank God always for you, brothers and sisters loved by the Lord, because from the beginning God has chosen you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and through belief in the truth. |
to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. | 14He called you to this through our gospel, so that you might obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. |
Therefore, brethren, stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught, whether by word or our epistle. | 15So then, brothers and sisters, stand firm and hold to the traditions you were taught, whether by what we said or what we wrote. |
Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace, | 16May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, |
comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work. | 17encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word. |
