Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him. | 1Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him. |
Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him, | 2Then Joseph told the physicians who served him to embalm his father’s body; so Jacob was embalmed. |
taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days. | 3The embalming process took the usual forty days. And the Egyptians mourned his death for seventy days. |
When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh's court, "If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him, | 4When the period of mourning was over, Joseph approached Pharaoh’s advisers and said, “Please do me this favor and speak to Pharaoh on my behalf. |
My father made me swear an oath and said, "I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.'" | 5Tell him that my father made me swear an oath. He said to me, ‘Listen, I am about to die. Take my body back to the land of Canaan, and bury me in the tomb I prepared for myself.’ So please allow me to go and bury my father. After his burial, I will return without delay.” |
Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do." | 6Pharaoh agreed to Joseph’s request. “Go and bury your father, as he made you promise,” he said. |
So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh's officials accompanied him--the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt-- | 7So Joseph went up to bury his father. He was accompanied by all of Pharaoh’s officials, all the senior members of Pharaoh’s household, and all the senior officers of Egypt. |
besides all the members of Joseph's household and his brothers and those belonging to his father's household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen. | 8Joseph also took his entire household and his brothers and their households. But they left their little children and flocks and herds in the land of Goshen. |
Chariots and horsemen also went up with him. It was a very large company. | 9A great number of chariots and charioteers accompanied Joseph. |
When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father. | 10When they arrived at the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan River, they held a very great and solemn memorial service, with a seven-day period of mourning for Joseph’s father. |
When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning." That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim. | 11The local residents, the Canaanites, watched them mourning at the threshing floor of Atad. Then they renamed that place (which is near the Jordan) Abel-mizraim, for they said, “This is a place of deep mourning for these Egyptians.” |
So Jacob's sons did as he had commanded them: | 12So Jacob’s sons did as he had commanded them. |
They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. | 13They carried his body to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre. This is the cave that Abraham had bought as a permanent burial site from Ephron the Hittite. Joseph Reassures His Brothers |
After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father. | 14After burying Jacob, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had accompanied him to his father’s burial. |
When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?" | 15But now that their father was dead, Joseph’s brothers became fearful. “Now Joseph will show his anger and pay us back for all the wrong we did to him,” they said. |
So they sent word to Joseph, saying, "Your father left these instructions before he died: | 16So they sent this message to Joseph: “Before your father died, he instructed us |
This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.' Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father." When their message came to him, Joseph wept. | 17to say to you: ‘Please forgive your brothers for the great wrong they did to you—for their sin in treating you so cruelly.’ So we, the servants of the God of your father, beg you to forgive our sin.” When Joseph received the message, he broke down and wept. |
His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. "We are your slaves," they said. | 18Then his brothers came and threw themselves down before Joseph. “Look, we are your slaves!” they said. |
But Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God? | 19But Joseph replied, “Don’t be afraid of me. Am I God, that I can punish you? |
You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. | 20You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people. |
So then, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children." And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them. | 21No, don’t be afraid. I will continue to take care of you and your children.” So he reassured them by speaking kindly to them. The Death of Joseph |
Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father's family. He lived a hundred and ten years | 22So Joseph and his brothers and their families continued to live in Egypt. Joseph lived to the age of 110. |
and saw the third generation of Ephraim's children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph's knees. | 23He lived to see three generations of descendants of his son Ephraim, and he lived to see the birth of the children of Manasseh’s son Makir, whom he claimed as his own. |
Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob." | 24“Soon I will die,” Joseph told his brothers, “but God will surely come to help you and lead you out of this land of Egypt. He will bring you back to the land he solemnly promised to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob.” |
And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place." | 25Then Joseph made the sons of Israel swear an oath, and he said, “When God comes to help you and lead you back, you must take my bones with you.” |
So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt. | 26So Joseph died at the age of 110. The Egyptians embalmed him, and his body was placed in a coffin in Egypt. |
