1Joseph threw himself on his father and wept over him and kissed him.

1Then Joseph embraced his father, cried over him, and kissed him.

2Then Joseph directed the physicians in his service to embalm his father Israel. So the physicians embalmed him,

2After this, he issued orders to his physician servants to embalm his father. So they embalmed Israel.

3taking a full forty days, for that was the time required for embalming. And the Egyptians mourned for him seventy days.

3It took 40 days to complete the process, the normal period required for embalming. Meanwhile, the Egyptians mourned for him for 70 days.

4When the days of mourning had passed, Joseph said to Pharaoh's court, "If I have found favor in your eyes, speak to Pharaoh for me. Tell him,

4At the conclusion of the mourning period, Joseph addressed Pharaoh's household. "If you're satisfied with me, would you please take this message to Pharaoh for me? Tell him,

5My father made me swear an oath and said, "I am about to die; bury me in the tomb I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." Now let me go up and bury my father; then I will return.'"

5My father told me, "Look! I'm about to die. Bury me in my grave that I dug for myself in the land of Canaan." So please let me travel to bury my father. I'll be right back.'"

6Pharaoh said, "Go up and bury your father, as he made you swear to do."

6"Please go," Pharaoh replied. "Bury your father, as he asked you to do."

7So Joseph went up to bury his father. All Pharaoh's officials accompanied him--the dignitaries of his court and all the dignitaries of Egypt--

7So Joseph got up and went to bury his father, accompanied by all of Pharaoh's servants, all of the elders of Egypt,

8besides all the members of Joseph's household and his brothers and those belonging to his father's household. Only their children and their flocks and herds were left in Goshen.

9Chariots and horsemen also went up with him. It was a very large company.

10When they reached the threshing floor of Atad, near the Jordan, they lamented loudly and bitterly; and there Joseph observed a seven-day period of mourning for his father.

10When they arrived at Atad's threshing floor, which is located beyond the Jordan River, they held a great and mournful memorial service, during which Joseph spent seven days mourning for his father.

11When the Canaanites who lived there saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "The Egyptians are holding a solemn ceremony of mourning." That is why that place near the Jordan is called Abel Mizraim.

11As soon as the Canaanites who lived in the land observed the mourning going on at Atad's threshing floor, they commented "This is a significant time of mourning for the Egyptians." That's why the place, which is located beyond the Jordan River, became known as Abel-mizraim.

12So Jacob's sons did as he had commanded them:

13They carried him to the land of Canaan and buried him in the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre, which Abraham had bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite.

14After burying his father, Joseph returned to Egypt, together with his brothers and all the others who had gone with him to bury his father.

15When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "What if Joseph holds a grudge against us and pays us back for all the wrongs we did to him?"

15Later, after Joseph's brothers faced the reality of their father's death, they asked themselves, "What happens if Joseph decides to hold a grudge against us? What if he pays us back in full for all the wrong things we did to him?"

16So they sent word to Joseph, saying, "Your father left these instructions before he died:

16So they sent this message to Joseph:

17This is what you are to say to Joseph: I ask you to forgive your brothers the sins and the wrongs they committed in treating you so badly.' Now please forgive the sins of the servants of the God of your father." When their message came to him, Joseph wept.

17"Before he died, your father left some instructions. He told us, 'Tell Joseph, "Please forgive your brothers' offenses. I beg you, forgive their sins, because they wronged you."' So please forgive the transgression of the servants of your father's God." Joseph wept when they talked to him.

18His brothers then came and threw themselves down before him. "We are your slaves," they said.

18So Joseph's brothers went to visit him, fell prostrate in front of him, and declared, "Look! We're your servants."

19But Joseph said to them, "Don't be afraid. Am I in the place of God?

19"Don't be afraid," Joseph responded. "Am I sitting in God's place?

20You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.

20As far as you're concerned, you were planning evil against me, but God intended it for good, planning to bring about the present result so that many people would be preserved alive.

21So then, don't be afraid. I will provide for you and your children." And he reassured them and spoke kindly to them.

21So don't be afraid! I'll take care of you and your little ones." So Joseph kept on comforting them, speaking to the needs of their hearts.

22Joseph stayed in Egypt, along with all his father's family. He lived a hundred and ten years

22Joseph continued to live in Egypt, along with his father's household, until he was 110 years old.

23and saw the third generation of Ephraim's children. Also the children of Makir son of Manasseh were placed at birth on Joseph's knees.

23Joseph saw the third generation of Ephraim's children, as well as the children who had been born to Manasseh's son Machir, whom he adopted as his own.

24Then Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die. But God will surely come to your aid and take you up out of this land to the land he promised on oath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob."

24Later, Joseph told his brothers, "I'm going to die soon, but God will certainly provide for you and bring you up from this land to the land that he promised with an oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob."

25And Joseph made the Israelites swear an oath and said, "God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up from this place."

25So Joseph made all of Israel's other children make this promise: "Because God is certainly going to take care of you, you are to carry my bones up from here."

26So Joseph died at the age of a hundred and ten. And after they embalmed him, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.

26Some time later, Joseph died at the age of 110 years, and he was embalmed and placed in a coffin in Egypt.
