New International Version | New Living Translation |
The Spirit clearly says that in later times some will abandon the faith and follow deceiving spirits and things taught by demons. | 1Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. |
Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron. | 2These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead. |
They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and who know the truth. | 3They will say it is wrong to be married and wrong to eat certain foods. But God created those foods to be eaten with thanks by faithful people who know the truth. |
For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, | 4Since everything God created is good, we should not reject any of it but receive it with thanks. |
because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer. | 5For we know it is made acceptable by the word of God and prayer. A Good Servant of Christ Jesus |
If you point these things out to the brothers and sisters, you will be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed. | 6If you explain these things to the brothers and sisters, Timothy, you will be a worthy servant of Christ Jesus, one who is nourished by the message of faith and the good teaching you have followed. |
Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives' tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. | 7Do not waste time arguing over godless ideas and old wives’ tales. Instead, train yourself to be godly. |
For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come. | 8“Physical training is good, but training for godliness is much better, promising benefits in this life and in the life to come.” |
This is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance. | 9This is a trustworthy saying, and everyone should accept it. |
That is why we labor and strive, because we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all people, and especially of those who believe. | 10This is why we work hard and continue to struggle, for our hope is in the living God, who is the Savior of all people and particularly of all believers. |
Command and teach these things. | 11Teach these things and insist that everyone learn them. |
Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity. | 12Don’t let anyone think less of you because you are young. Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity. |
Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching. | 13Until I get there, focus on reading the Scriptures to the church, encouraging the believers, and teaching them. |
Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through prophecy when the body of elders laid their hands on you. | 14Do not neglect the spiritual gift you received through the prophecy spoken over you when the elders of the church laid their hands on you. |
Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress. | 15Give your complete attention to these matters. Throw yourself into your tasks so that everyone will see your progress. |
Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. | 16Keep a close watch on how you live and on your teaching. Stay true to what is right for the sake of your own salvation and the salvation of those who hear you. |
