New International Version | NET Bible |
The LORD is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth. | 1O LORD, the God who avenges! O God who avenges, reveal your splendor! |
Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve. | 2Rise up, O judge of the earth! Pay back the proud! |
How long, LORD, will the wicked, how long will the wicked be jubilant? | 3O LORD, how long will the wicked, how long will the wicked celebrate? |
They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting. | 4They spew out threats and speak defiantly; all the evildoers boast. |
They crush your people, LORD; they oppress your inheritance. | 5O LORD, they crush your people; they oppress the nation that belongs to you. |
They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless. | 6They kill the widow and the one residing outside his native land, and they murder the fatherless. |
They say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice." | 7Then they say, "The LORD does not see this; the God of Jacob does not take notice of it." |
Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise? | 8Take notice of this, you ignorant people! You fools, when will you ever understand? |
Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? | 9Does the one who makes the human ear not hear? Does the one who forms the human eye not see? |
Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge? | 10Does the one who disciplines the nations not punish? He is the one who imparts knowledge to human beings! |
The LORD knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile. | 11The LORD knows that peoples' thoughts are morally bankrupt. |
Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law; | 12How blessed is the one whom you instruct, O LORD, the one whom you teach from your law, |
you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked. | 13in order to protect him from times of trouble, until the wicked are destroyed. |
For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. | 14Certainly the LORD does not forsake his people; he does not abandon the nation that belongs to him. |
Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it. | 15For justice will prevail, and all the morally upright will be vindicated. |
Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers? | 16Who will rise up to defend me against the wicked? Who will stand up for me against the evildoers? |
Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. | 17If the LORD had not helped me, I would have laid down in the silence of death. |
When I said, "My foot is slipping," your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. | 18If I say, "My foot is slipping," your loyal love, O LORD, supports me. |
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. | 19When worries threaten to overwhelm me, your soothing touch makes me happy. |
Can a corrupt throne be allied with you-- a throne that brings on misery by its decrees? | 20Cruel rulers are not your allies, those who make oppressive laws. |
The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. | 21They conspire against the blameless, and condemn to death the innocent. |
But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. | 22But the LORD will protect me, and my God will shelter me. |
He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them. | 23He will pay them back for their sin. He will destroy them because of their evil; the LORD our God will destroy them. |
