New International Version | Christian Standard Bible |
The LORD is a God who avenges. O God who avenges, shine forth. | 1LORD, God of vengeance--God of vengeance, shine! |
Rise up, Judge of the earth; pay back to the proud what they deserve. | 2Rise up, Judge of the earth; repay the proud what they deserve. |
How long, LORD, will the wicked, how long will the wicked be jubilant? | 3LORD, how long will the wicked--how long will the wicked celebrate? |
They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers are full of boasting. | 4They pour out arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. |
They crush your people, LORD; they oppress your inheritance. | 5LORD, they crush your people; they oppress your heritage. |
They slay the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless. | 6They kill the widow and the resident alien and murder the fatherless. |
They say, "The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob takes no notice." | 7They say, "The LORD doesn't see it. The God of Jacob doesn't pay attention." |
Take notice, you senseless ones among the people; you fools, when will you become wise? | 8Pay attention, you stupid people! Fools, when will you be wise? |
Does he who fashioned the ear not hear? Does he who formed the eye not see? | 9Can the one who shaped the ear not hear, the one who formed the eye not see? |
Does he who disciplines nations not punish? Does he who teaches mankind lack knowledge? | 10The one who instructs nations, the one who teaches mankind knowledge--does he not discipline? |
The LORD knows all human plans; he knows that they are futile. | 11The LORD knows the thoughts of mankind; they are futile. |
Blessed is the one you discipline, LORD, the one you teach from your law; | 12LORD, how happy is anyone you discipline and teach from your law |
you grant them relief from days of trouble, till a pit is dug for the wicked. | 13to give him relief from troubled times until a pit is dug for the wicked. |
For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. | 14The LORD will not leave his people or abandon his heritage, |
Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it. | 15for the administration of justice will again be righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. |
Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will take a stand for me against evildoers? | 16Who stands up for me against the wicked? Who takes a stand for me against evildoers? |
Unless the LORD had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. | 17If the LORD had not been my helper, I would soon rest in the silence of death. |
When I said, "My foot is slipping," your unfailing love, LORD, supported me. | 18If I say, "My foot is slipping," your faithful love will support me, LORD. |
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy. | 19When I am filled with cares, your comfort brings me joy. |
Can a corrupt throne be allied with you-- a throne that brings on misery by its decrees? | 20Can a corrupt throne be your ally, a throne that makes evil laws? |
The wicked band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. | 21They band together against the life of the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. |
But the LORD has become my fortress, and my God the rock in whom I take refuge. | 22But the LORD is my refuge; my God is the rock of my protection. |
He will repay them for their sins and destroy them for their wickedness; the LORD our God will destroy them. | 23He will pay them back for their sins and destroy them for their evil. The LORD our God will destroy them. |
