| 1"Now, son of man, take a block of clay, put it in front of you and draw the city of Jerusalem on it. | 1"And you, son of man, take a brick and set it in front of you. Inscribe a city on it--Jerusalem. |
| 2Then lay siege to it: Erect siege works against it, build a ramp up to it, set up camps against it and put battering rams around it. | 2Lay siege to it! Build siege works against it. Erect a siege ramp against it! Post soldiers outside it and station battering rams around it. |
| 3Then take an iron pan, place it as an iron wall between you and the city and turn your face toward it. It will be under siege, and you shall besiege it. This will be a sign to the people of Israel. | 3Then for your part take an iron frying pan and set it up as an iron wall between you and the city. Set your face toward it. It is to be under siege; you are to besiege it. This is a sign for the house of Israel. |
| 4"Then lie on your left side and put the sin of the people of Israel upon yourself. You are to bear their sin for the number of days you lie on your side. | 4"Also for your part lie on your left side and place the iniquity of the house of Israel on it. For the number of days you lie on your side you will bear their iniquity. |
| 5I have assigned you the same number of days as the years of their sin. So for 390 days you will bear the sin of the people of Israel. | 5I have determined that the number of the years of their iniquity are to be the number of days for you--390 days. So bear the iniquity of the house of Israel. |
| 6"After you have finished this, lie down again, this time on your right side, and bear the sin of the people of Judah. I have assigned you 40 days, a day for each year. | 6"When you have completed these days, then lie down a second time, but on your right side, and bear the iniquity of the house of Judah 40 days--I have assigned one day for each year. |
| 7Turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem and with bared arm prophesy against her. | 7You must turn your face toward the siege of Jerusalem with your arm bared and prophesy against it. |

| 9"Take wheat and barley, beans and lentils, millet and spelt; put them in a storage jar and use them to make bread for yourself. You are to eat it during the 390 days you lie on your side. | 9"As for you, take wheat, barley, beans, lentils, millet, and spelt, put them in a single container, and make food from them for yourself. For the same number of days that you lie on your side--390 days--you will eat it. |
| 10Weigh out twenty shekels of food to eat each day and eat it at set times. | 10The food you eat will be eight ounces a day by weight; you must eat it at fixed times. |
| 11Also measure out a sixth of a hin of water and drink it at set times. | 11And you must drink water by measure, a pint and a half; you must drink it at fixed times. |
| 12Eat the food as you would a loaf of barley bread; bake it in the sight of the people, using human excrement for fuel." | 12And you must eat the food like you would a barley cake. You must bake it in front of them over a fire made with dried human excrement." |
| 13The LORD said, "In this way the people of Israel will eat defiled food among the nations where I will drive them." | 13And the LORD said, "This is how the people of Israel will eat their unclean food among the nations where I will banish them." |
| 14Then I said, "Not so, Sovereign LORD! I have never defiled myself. From my youth until now I have never eaten anything found dead or torn by wild animals. No impure meat has ever entered my mouth." | 14And I said, "Ah, sovereign LORD, I have never been ceremonially defiled before. I have never eaten a carcass or an animal torn by wild beasts; from my youth up, unclean meat has never entered my mouth." |
| 15"Very well," he said, "I will let you bake your bread over cow dung instead of human excrement." | 15So he said to me, "All right then, I will substitute cow's manure instead of human excrement. You will cook your food over it." |
| 16He then said to me: "Son of man, I am about to cut off the food supply in Jerusalem. The people will eat rationed food in anxiety and drink rationed water in despair, | 16Then he said to me, "Son of man, I am about to remove the bread supply in Jerusalem. They will eat their bread ration anxiously, and they will drink their water ration in terror |
| 17for food and water will be scarce. They will be appalled at the sight of each other and will waste away because of their sin. | 17because they will lack bread and water. Each one will be terrified, and they will rot for their iniquity. |
