New International Version | NET Bible |
No one who has been emasculated by crushing or cutting may enter the assembly of the LORD. | 1A man with crushed or severed genitals may not enter the assembly of the LORD. |
No one born of a forbidden marriage nor any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, not even in the tenth generation. | 2A person of illegitimate birth may not enter the assembly of the LORD; to the tenth generation no one related to him may do so. |
No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, not even in the tenth generation. | 3An Ammonite or Moabite may not enter the assembly of the LORD; to the tenth generation none of their descendants shall ever do so, |
For they did not come to meet you with bread and water on your way when you came out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram Naharaim to pronounce a curse on you. | 4for they did not meet you with food and water on the way as you came from Egypt, and furthermore, they hired Balaam son of Beor of Pethor in Aram Naharaim to curse you. |
However, the LORD your God would not listen to Balaam but turned the curse into a blessing for you, because the LORD your God loves you. | 5But the LORD your God refused to listen to Balaam and changed the curse to a blessing, for the LORD your God loves you. |
Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them as long as you live. | 6You must not seek peace and prosperity for them through all the ages to come. |
Do not despise an Edomite, for the Edomites are related to you. Do not despise an Egyptian, because you resided as foreigners in their country. | 7You must not hate an Edomite, for he is your relative; you must not hate an Egyptian, for you lived as a foreigner in his land. |
The third generation of children born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD. | 8Children of the third generation born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD. |
When you are encamped against your enemies, keep away from everything impure. | 9When you go out as an army against your enemies, guard yourselves against anything impure. |
If one of your men is unclean because of a nocturnal emission, he is to go outside the camp and stay there. | 10If there is someone among you who is impure because of some nocturnal emission, he must leave the camp; he may not reenter it immediately. |
But as evening approaches he is to wash himself, and at sunset he may return to the camp. | 11When evening arrives he must wash himself with water and then at sunset he may reenter the camp. |
Designate a place outside the camp where you can go to relieve yourself. | 12You are to have a place outside the camp to serve as a latrine. |
As part of your equipment have something to dig with, and when you relieve yourself, dig a hole and cover up your excrement. | 13You must have a spade among your other equipment and when you relieve yourself outside you must dig a hole with the spade and then turn and cover your excrement. |
For the LORD your God moves about in your camp to protect you and to deliver your enemies to you. Your camp must be holy, so that he will not see among you anything indecent and turn away from you. | 14For the LORD your God walks about in the middle of your camp to deliver you and defeat your enemies for you. Therefore your camp should be holy, so that he does not see anything indecent among you and turn away from you. |
If a slave has taken refuge with you, do not hand them over to their master. | 15You must not return an escaped slave to his master when he has run away to you. |
Let them live among you wherever they like and in whatever town they choose. Do not oppress them. | 16Indeed, he may live among you in any place he chooses, in whichever of your villages he prefers; you must not oppress him. |
No Israelite man or woman is to become a shrine prostitute. | 17There must never be a sacred prostitute among the young women of Israel nor a sacred male prostitute among the young men of Israel. |
You must not bring the earnings of a female prostitute or of a male prostitute into the house of the LORD your God to pay any vow, because the LORD your God detests them both. | 18You must never bring the pay of a female prostitute or the wage of a male prostitute into the temple of the LORD your God in fulfillment of any vow, for both of these are abhorrent to the LORD your God. |
Do not charge a fellow Israelite interest, whether on money or food or anything else that may earn interest. | 19You must not charge interest on a loan to your fellow Israelite, whether on money, food, or anything else that has been loaned with interest. |
You may charge a foreigner interest, but not a fellow Israelite, so that the LORD your God may bless you in everything you put your hand to in the land you are entering to possess. | 20You may lend with interest to a foreigner, but not to your fellow Israelite; if you keep this command the LORD your God will bless you in all you undertake in the land you are about to enter to possess. |
If you make a vow to the LORD your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the LORD your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. | 21When you make a vow to the LORD your God you must not delay in fulfilling it, for otherwise he will surely hold you accountable as a sinner. |
But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty. | 22If you refrain from making a vow, it will not be sinful. |
Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to do, because you made your vow freely to the LORD your God with your own mouth. | 23Whatever you vow, you must be careful to do what you have promised, such as what you have vowed to the LORD your God as a freewill offering. |
If you enter your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat all the grapes you want, but do not put any in your basket. | 24When you enter the vineyard of your neighbor you may eat as many grapes as you please, but you must not take away any in a container. |
If you enter your neighbor's grainfield, you may pick kernels with your hands, but you must not put a sickle to their standing grain. | 25When you go into the ripe grain fields of your neighbor you may pluck off the kernels with your hand, but you must not use a sickle on your neighbor's ripe grain. |
