The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns and seven heads, with ten crowns on its horns, and on each head a blasphemous name. | 1And the dragon stood on the sand of the seashore. Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. |
The beast I saw resembled a leopard, but had feet like those of a bear and a mouth like that of a lion. The dragon gave the beast his power and his throne and great authority. | 2And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority. |
One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. | 3I saw one of his heads as if it had been slain, and his fatal wound was healed. And the whole earth was amazed and followed after the beast; |
People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and they also worshiped the beast and asked, "Who is like the beast? Who can wage war against it?" | 4they worshiped the dragon because he gave his authority to the beast; and they worshiped the beast, saying, "Who is like the beast, and who is able to wage war with him?" |
The beast was given a mouth to utter proud words and blasphemies and to exercise its authority for forty-two months. | 5There was given to him a mouth speaking arrogant words and blasphemies, and authority to act for forty-two months was given to him. |
It opened its mouth to blaspheme God, and to slander his name and his dwelling place and those who live in heaven. | 6And he opened his mouth in blasphemies against God, to blaspheme His name and His tabernacle, that is, those who dwell in heaven. |
It was given power to wage war against God's holy people and to conquer them. And it was given authority over every tribe, people, language and nation. | 7It was also given to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them, and authority over every tribe and people and tongue and nation was given to him. |
All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast--all whose names have not been written in the Lamb's book of life, the Lamb who was slain from the creation of the world. | 8All who dwell on the earth will worship him, everyone whose name has not been written from the foundation of the world in the book of life of the Lamb who has been slain. |
Whoever has ears, let them hear. | 9If anyone has an ear, let him hear. |
"If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity they will go. If anyone is to be killed with the sword, with the sword they will be killed." This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of God's people. | 10If anyone is destined for captivity, to captivity he goes; if anyone kills with the sword, with the sword he must be killed. Here is the perseverance and the faith of the saints. |
Then I saw a second beast, coming out of the earth. It had two horns like a lamb, but it spoke like a dragon. | 11Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb and he spoke as a dragon. |
It exercised all the authority of the first beast on its behalf, and made the earth and its inhabitants worship the first beast, whose fatal wound had been healed. | 12He exercises all the authority of the first beast in his presence. And he makes the earth and those who dwell in it to worship the first beast, whose fatal wound was healed. |
And it performed great signs, even causing fire to come down from heaven to the earth in full view of the people. | 13He performs great signs, so that he even makes fire come down out of heaven to the earth in the presence of men. |
Because of the signs it was given power to perform on behalf of the first beast, it deceived the inhabitants of the earth. It ordered them to set up an image in honor of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived. | 14And he deceives those who dwell on the earth because of the signs which it was given him to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who dwell on the earth to make an image to the beast who had the wound of the sword and has come to life. |
The second beast was given power to give breath to the image of the first beast, so that the image could speak and cause all who refused to worship the image to be killed. | 15And it was given to him to give breath to the image of the beast, so that the image of the beast would even speak and cause as many as do not worship the image of the beast to be killed. |
It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads, | 16And he causes all, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free men and the slaves, to be given a mark on their right hand or on their forehead, |
so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name. | 17and he provides that no one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name. |
This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666. | 18Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six. |
